no the middle finger never meant anything racial and i beleive it was started during the revolutionary war
Longbows require the middle fingers to use so enemys cut them off but the remaining people who weren't ever captured flipped them off to insult them...
No, it never meant anything racist, all it meant was I AM STONE COLD STEVE AUSTIN, AND IM GONNA OPEN A CAN OF WHOOP ASS ON YOU
Who is your daddy, and what does he do?

In Iran, and several other middle eastern countries, the "thumbs up" gesture means the same as "the finger" in western countries which can result in misunderstandings.
LOL, no wonder we're hated there.

The middle finger was used for in the revolutionary war, back in medieval days, one of the countrys, when they caught their enemy, would cut off their middle finger. So when the enemy ran into battle they would flip off their opponent to show them they have never been captured, thus being a hard warrior to defeat. :D
i use the finger a lot but i don't know what it means.

That's not true. It's just an urban legend.
What can a thoughtful man hope for mankind on Earth, given the experience of the past million years? Nothing

The middle finger comes from the V sign, which originated during the Hundred Year's War. That's how the British longbowmen taunted the French knights, showing them that they still had their bow fingers readily attached.
...also, TL;DR.

well, i can too but my parents get mad when i flip them off. i NEVER cuss at them cause that just leads to bad shit, and it's disrespectful
forgive me if my sig is wrong
I like to refer to it as the bad hand signal when I'm driving.
I just see the middle finger as "Fuck you" and thats all. Its meant to piss someone off. Well if its not i have been using it wrong.
Beware the double deuce!
Strong Bad's favorite style of 'the bird'.
Its traced back to ancient rome a greece.
The longbowman theory is way off.
THe origin is much older; in ancient Rome, they thought all parts of the body are coonected to eachother by energy links, or something, and that the middle finger was connected this way to the genitalia. So flipping someone off would be the equivelant of wagging your member at someone.

I've heard that in sign language it means erected penis...
