I'm from the US and looking to go to school in Australia, I was wondering which area is better?
Brisbane or Melbourne?
Also, what is the better one like socially, etc.?
Thanks in advance.

So you take a plane ride every day there and back? Makes sense.

On a more serious note if you've been to both then you decide, its all preferrence.

Also this will must likely turn into another stupid *Nation* VS America thread that goes on for 5+ pages.

Thanks to Marsupial for the sig, and kurofelis for my banner.

Haha, I mean for university, I'd be an international student

Also, what's this about Greeks in Melbourne?
And, how hot does it get in Brisbane?
I've never been to Australia, Hawai'i is probably the closest I've ever been.
I just want to live somewhere else and study somewhere else since I've been in the US all of my life

Well before you enroll or do anything retarded along those lines take my advice and check out the area you'll be at. From experience it's never good to agree to something not know what you are going o be doing/where you'll be, etc. You should check out both areas before you do anything.

Melbourne I sometimes affectionately call 'Greek City'. It has the 3rd largest population of Greeks in one city in the world. 2nd to Athens and Thessaloniki, I believe.

And, how hot does it get in Brisbane?
In Summer it can reach around 40 decrees celcius. I believe thats around 110 Fahrenheit.

If you want to live here, you're making a huge mistake buddy. Australia is going through tough economic times, so moving here is a mistake. Go to Europe, if you must move. Thats what I'll be doing.

Oh word? I mean I just want to live there while going to university and then depending on how much I like it there decide if I want to stay or move back here.
The U.S. is going through some rough times too, however I don't know how it compares to Australia as I'm ignorant on the situaton there.
How are the people? Is life all about the daily grind and work?

Melbourne has a real cool underground scene, and is much more "fashionable".
Note that I said "fashionable", not fashionable. Some of the fashions that have gone through melbourne have been mega lame.
It's quite yuppy in some areas, which means that people are snobby and upperclass. But in saying that, Brisbane has a yuppy class too.
In my honest opinion, I think Brisbane is better to live in, but Melbourne is cooler to visit.
Melbourne is MUCH more expensive, and is a very arty society (as you'll see if you go to Brunswick street).
Melbourne is more multicultural, and a hell of a lot colder (gets to negatives and has frost sometimes).

I've lived in Melbourne a few years back, and am living in Brisbane now, and I have to say that they've both got their pros and cons.
Both have cool people, scenes, different things about them, so really it's just a personal choice, my friend.
Cheers.

Don't take my word for it though.

It depends where you live, your experiences, all that kind of stuff.
In Brisbane it's easy to get a job anywhere really, but I'm talking from the perspective of a 17 year old student, places like cafes, supermarkets, all that. We have a French person staying with us and she got a job within the firs few weeks in a cafe, easy.
In Melbourne there is a big city, which means lots of stores, and lots of jobs, so I'd say they're both equal.
Although, like I said, Melbourne is much more expensive, so you'd want to look carefully for a higher paying job, so you can keep up.

Oh and in Brisbane, the highest it's gotten to is 42 degrees celcius while I lived here, but that was in a heat wave. It gets around... 30 tops in summer, but most of the time it's enjoyable and not too hot. You've got the beach an hour away anyway haha. Right now it's a bit chilly because it's winter.

Melbourne is the most liveable city in Aus, I've heard from friends.
Brisbane I think of as more of a holiday spot, but thats just me.
