What determines the user of the day in the forums? Is it simply whoever posted the most in that day, or is there more to it?

There is not more to it.
To determine User of the day, it chooses RANDOMLY.

Very slightly more to it than that - it's chosen randomly from users who have 50+ BBS posts, so that people who have never posted or only post very rarely aren't included in the draw. It's a fair watermark, because those people will likely never even realise that they got UOTD.

Why is it a bad idea for it to be random? If you ask me, it's a better idea to do it that way, because then there's no bias involved, and nobody has the tedious job of selecting a random user from the pool of hundreds of thousands each day.

Tom either wrote a script or had one written by someone else a long time ago. It randomly picks a user who has 1+ BBS posts every day that has never won user of the day. With the number of users on NG that have posted, the chances of winning are classed as 'slim', but it's a decent thing to check every single day ;)

You should've clicked the little "[?]" next to where it says who's UOTD.

The BBS User of the Day doesn't WIN ANYTHING, such as the $100 per day Tom's currently giving out contest thingie, so what does it matter if it's a "very bad idea"?

It looks like you're saying " a user who makes 1 or more posts per day" there, i.e. a 1.000+ ppd BBS user. Heh.
