I live in Queens, but I will be relocating to Ulster County for college starting next month, at least for my first year; I may move back downstate in late 2009.

Well, you're in Canada, so you don't count as a referance point.

Upstate is pretty much all of the actual state of New York(aside from the Adirondacks(WAY north)and the city), to differentiate from New York City, which most people who don't live there think of when they think NY. So, everything but the city and the mountains.

I do live in upstate.

I'm sorry, but I was under the impression that things in the MIDDLE of places was more of a "middle" part of the state, and not "up" or "northern" part of it... WTF, isn't buffalo way out west? you'd figure NG would be sectioned off into down state, upstate and western state.

yeah, I'm like right in the Adirondack Mountains. Grew up just south of Lake Placid. Never went to NYC until 2 weeks ago when I had to go pick Rucklo up on fucking Broadway. Parallel parked my full size van there, nearly threw my GPS out the window after going through the same intersection about 5 times.

and the Adirondack Mountains are only a swath of 6 million acres in a sort of circle offset and just touching Lake Champlain a bit on the Eastern side

Right now I'm in western New York, but normally I live upstate.

In the wiki article(map caption), it says that the yellow section is the "standard definition" of upstate but green is refered to as the "true upstate" by locals...so i guess I would be "standard" upstate, instead of "true"?

The Adirondack Mountains is a state park often referred to as lying within the "blue line". It's about 6 million acres divided almost half/half of state and private land.

Saranac Lake, Tupper Lake, Long lake, Lake Placid, Warrensburg, Ticonderoga... etc are in the Adirondacks.

Upstate NY= Snow and trees, No people...

Not too many folks at all. I grew up in a town called Keene and I graduated with 12 other kids from High School.
