British spelling of "Mother" 2008-07-03 13:35:09 Reply

Would it be "Muther" or "Mother"?

It seems more sensible to spell it "Muther" due to the fact that us, the British, spell it "mum", although the that spelling just makes it seem so gramatically incorrect.

And vice-versa goes for "Mother"

But I suppose, in my opinion, it is probably "Mother".

Although I find that mum is so much better than the American spelling and pronunciation that is "mom".

The British spell it Mum because they actually pronounce it Mum. The English pronounce it Mom, leading to the dramatic conclusion that they must spell it that way as well.

It's mother because it should be spelt mother. The only reason the shortened version is spelt 'mum' is because it's pronounced that way over here.

For future reference, British is not a language, nor is it a way to describe any accents from England. When people simply use the term English I assume they mean British English unless it specifically says American English.

God, everyone knows Americans are retarded.

It's 'mum' and 'mother'. The rest of the world is normal, unlike you. We use regular and sensible units for our measurements - 10mm in 1cm, 100cm in 1m, 1000m in 1km. Not whatever fucked up system you use.

Also, it's colour. Not color.

There is really no point in arguing over who speaks better English, because English is easily the most retarded language ever in so many ways.

And I would have to agree with the measuring system, although the US have been using it more in schools.

Neither has American English. It's a mongrel language, a mash-up, and since it's spoken by so many people so widely in the world, it's a small wonder the rules are as consistent as they are, even if it's not much.

In Australia we say Mum because it's pronounced like that.

We don't and I'm assuming Brits don't pronounce Mother as 'Muh-Ther'.

At least in Australia we say it 'Moh-Ther'.

American English is more commonly used, mainly because it's easier and doesn't involve as much dicking around with vowels. British English is one step away from French in that area.

Like that makes any sense.

I admit that the imperial system is severely brain-damaged, but what do you expect? Americans didn't want to do anything the same as their evil British oppressor scum back in the 1800s. Or something like that.

Also, it's colour. Not color.

Two silent vowels instead of one. What a waste of time.

NON-AMERICANS RULE.

In most ways, but this is an exception.

Yeah, but we're talking about English here. "All grammar rules are to be followed, no exceptions". "There are exceptions to the grammar rules, and this is a rule", etc.

Most dialects of English aren't similar at all. I probably couldn't understand someone from Australia or South Africa very well, and they probably wouldn't be able to understand me. Hell, I can barely understand what the black people in my school are saying most of the time.
