I've been wondering about this and can't come up with an answer myself. Why do people hate random battles so much? They are put there as a way to condition your character and they don't seem to hinder my play at all. Why do people hate them so?

Because you are walking through an open field, when suddenly:

A BUNCH OF MONSTERS SURPRISE ATTACK YOU FROM BEHIND!

Earthbound and Blue Dragon have the best "random battle" system. You can see the enemies before hand and you can decide to fight them or not.

So? aren't you expecting it? This is called battle. How is it a surprise attack if your characters are ready for battle and somewhere previously in the game some old man said "there are monsters out there".

And there is no way to avoid enemies with random battles. Final Fantasy XII was a step in the right direction, since I could avoid most encounters by staying away from enemies.

I am not pushing for realism in RPGs, I just want to see a representation of my enemies on the map.

I hate them because I'm trying to fucking get somewhere and RANDOM BATTLE every two steps is just a chore.

Or when you're just trying to save because you're in a hurry and have to go. I hate being inside of a building and trying to get back to a save point and getting attacked every 3 steps. Especially if I have no life and am trying to avoid death.

It's all luck at that point, no skill. And usually, bad luck wins. :(

I hate it when you finish a boss battle, then after that you have to watch a ton of cutscenes. You run for a save point, but you get killed by a random battle. After that you have to go through everything all over again.

Random battles come out of the blue you can't even see/hear them coming, and sometimes its every two steps that there is a battle how annoying. The gameplay in Enchanted Arms was made like 2 times better when I learned the "no random battles skill" I'm FREE.

the point of these rpgs is to fight in these battles. If you think it's a chore then don't play them. They are progress. It isn't like you aren't gaining anything. Plus there are many games with items that let you avoid random battles which should be used for just those situations that you guys mentioned.

Oh yeah. Anyone ever hear of ESCAPE.

Pokemon is the best example of why I hate random battles. I'll be around an area with much lower level Pokemon than mine, so fighting them is pointless. I'll be looking for items I may have missed or accessing areas I couldn't get to previously, and continually run into random battles with low level Pokemon. It wouldn't be so bad if it didn't take so damn long to prepare a fight. That's my biggest problem with Pokemon, I hate waiting for a fight to begin. Finally once I have the option to make my move, I just click run away.

I know there are items to keep random Pokemon from attacking, but I hate the idea of wasting those items when I just want to back track and get stuff I may have missed.

I've been refurbished and reissued, prepackaged and precooked, decontaminated and deloused, but I still smell, sound, look and feel like shit.

Earthbound does it very well - if you are strong enough to OHKO a "random battle", you automatically win.

Whoo-hoo Waste 15+ seconds from starting the battle, then pressing the escape tap. Then repeat over and over and over. Also it kinda pisses me off that when you battle trainers in Pokemon YOU HAVE NO CHOICE, total bullshit.

Yeah same with Mario RPG's you can attack the enemies before you engage with battle to weaken them or just dodge them if you're not in the mood.

Final fantasy 2 just really wants to screw you over with random battles. Seriously. You could be walking along and then some goblins attack. Goblins? What a bunch of pussies. So you OHKO them and continue along. Then you see a

PENINSULA.

You walk over to explore the

PENINSULA

when you get into another random battle. Ok, no big deal right? I mean, it's just a random battle, right? How hard could it be? Very hard it is. It's like a bunch of Zombies and Rhinos and stuff and Bombs (the fire monsters) and they completely destroy you. They OHKO all your people in one turn, they petrify everybody in one single attack, put everyone to sleep, poison you, stun you, curse you, whatever they do, you die.

Now you might be saying, "Well maybe you should'nt have been going somwhere your not supposed to go to yet." But bear in mind, that a couple steps away, you were fighting level one goblins. There is no warning at all that the monsters on the

PENINSULA

were significantly stronger than you. You just happened to accidentally cross over some invisible line that signifies that you will be screwed over by the random battles. You can't even run, either. No, you have to have agility comparable to them to run. And you don't. Because their agility levels are over 423 times better than yours.

Moral of the story:
Stay away from any

PENINSULA

s you might find on the world map in FF2.
