I keep mine horizontal because on earlier models of the 360, having it stand up vertical will create a circular scratch on the disc, rendering it unplayable.

Vertical because it's most exposed to the air around it and because I don't have a lot of space in my console self. I could put another console on top of it, but the curvy design isn't exactly stable and there's still over heating issues. Damn you Microsoft.

I chose horizontal because of a bad incident.
I was playing call of duty 4 with the 360 standing vertical, when my friend (a PS2 fan) asked "can it lay horizontal too?"... so i paused the game and began to lay the 360 on its side. There was a horrible screeching noise, and then my COD4 game started having problems. I looked at the disk and there was a scratched out circle.

So ever since then, i've left my 360 on its side and never move it while a game is in it.

What the fuck? If you have it horizontally, it'll scratch your disk. If you have it vertically, it'll still scratch your disk.

I was planning on getting a 360 later this year, but if it suffers from a retarded problem like this, then fuck it.

none of the controllers plug in to the console so there's no risk in pulling it over

Well, technically, when it gets moved around even a wee bit when it's vertical, it'll fuck your disk.
You're pretty safe when it's horizontal, though.

I do have a pretty robust collection of scratched 360 disks, wanna see?

Only happens when you change orientation, which goes against both common sense and the manual's advisory not to do so.

Eh, it seems as though horizontal is the only option for me... My Xbox, as well as my friend's, seems to brutally scratch the game disk beyond repair when it's on it's side.

Horizontal. I've noticed that because of the curved shape of the 360, leaving it this way won't block a side from ventilation, as the air still has lots of room to escape.

I'd be very, very careful with your console up there.

Also, this thread inspired me to lay my console on it's horizontal side.

My GTA IV hardly works because of 1 scratch in the horizontal position, I played it for 6 hours, my other games a total of 5 days each, no scratches. Now i'm trying the verticle position, so far no scratches but i'm hoping that it will somehow effect the way it scans the disc because usually it makes lots of sounds like a computer then when it quiets down (during GTA IV) it says disc unreadable....can use additional help.

Horizontal, it's hard to keep the game disc in position if you put the console vertically!

Horizontal because it can only fit that way and it's easier to put discs in that way. I don't know shit about ventilation but I suppose it's better as everyone else says it is.

Horizontal: - (think of the horizon of a sky)
Vertical: | (like vertigo, the nausea you get after looking down from a great height)

I've been changing my Xbox's position for a while. At first it was vertical, then horizontal so that it wouldn't trip over, and now it's vertical again because it seems like it would ventilate better that way. I don't see how it could ventilate better with being on its side. As it's been said before, some of the vents are close to the surface that way.

Horizontal, like with my PS2.
I get really paranoid that the disc will fall out of the holder and get trapped in the console.

It's actually very easy to open up the PS2. I did it once to clean the laser.

I have always put my 360 vertical. It's fucked up some of my disk that way but I still put it vertical. You can just bring the disk to Hollywood Video and they'll buffer it for free (or not for free).

I had my 360 up vertical when I first got it. It's been like that until my Halo 3 disc got a nice ring-shaped scratch on it.
Now I have it horizontal.
