Let's ban fast food too, it makes people fat and gives them heart attacks.
While we're at it, let's get rid of alcohol. Think about how many people die from drinking and driving each year. I think we should ban cellphones too, since people talk on them and get into car crashes, resulting in loss of life. Hell, let's just get rid of cars altogether, there are way too many fatal accidents.
Fast food is food; it nourishes people and gives them energy, and is inexpensive.
Lol, if you haven't seen the documentary Supersize Me, you should. Fast food in the generic sense, doesn't nourish people, it's toxic. The only energy they get is from the sugar, and it's way more expensive than a meal made a home.
Alcohol plays an important part in social gatherings like parties. They wouldn't be the same without it.
Exactly, the drive home or getting your stomach pumped is half the fun.
Cell phones allow people to communicate wirelessly.
I heard something about people crossing the road and getting hit my someone talking/texting on their cellphone.
Cars can transport people.
They also make good roadkill of people.
Now, in case you didn't already catch on, I was being sarcastic when I was talking about banning all of that crap. But I've attempted an argument. Read on.
Let's compare that to other things:
Video games provide a source of entertainment and help form relationships with other people by playing multiplayer.
Ever seen the show Intervention? One of the guys on there was addicted to video games. He basically ignored everyone around him and didn't even let his little brother play with him. So much for forming relationships with other people.
Diets can help trim down people's weight and help them become fitter.
Diets can also kill people, see bulimia and anorexia.
Matches are easy to carry around and can create a fire quickly to cook food and warm bodies.
Not to mention burn down houses and burn shit, tons of fun.
Knives make cutting easier.
I'm glad I can cut people with ease now.
There is a negative side to almost everything. However, you need to look past that and see that some things are for the greater good, not to sound like a philosophical moron though.
Let's compare smoking now. There are, for the most part, no health benefits to smoking, other than calming yourself when you smoke. Smoking is also a very large cash cow, and for the cow to die would make many business lose a lot of customers and profit.
I hear stress is a big problem nowadays. People going on mass killing sprees and committing suicide. Take postal workers for example.
My point is, anything has negative consequences. But in order to determine what should stay and what should be banned, you need to determine the ratio of positive and negative reasons and outcomes. In regards to smoking, it will more likely kill you than do you any good. The reason why it's a large industry in the world is that people are addicted to them.
On a personal level, yes, smoking is pretty stupid. However, think about all the cash big tobacco makes. When a person gets sick, think about the nurses and doctors that get paid, not to mention pharmaceutical companies. Even Sanjay said that he'd lose business if tobacco was banned.
In my opinion, instead of banning smoking, we should instead try to first help the people who want to quit to stop, make people who are indecisive about smoking make up their mind to quit, and leave those who want to smoke be. This way, it will cut down a lot of smokers in the world, and lessen our environmental impact while keeping the ones who are firmly rooted in smoking not worry about price increases and bans.
Fuck people, my Opa quit cold turkey, if people can't do it with the patch or nicotine gum, then there is no chance of helping them. They do it because they enjoy it, so let them. If you want a smoke free environment then go pound sand where they've outlawed smoking.
True, I know it's going to be expensive as hell, and I'm sure that it's effectiveness is limited, but, when you think about it, doesn't everything have a cost?
In a country whose economy is based on private enterprise and making money? Yeah, good luck with that one.
I really don't know if all of that made any sense, but just pretend it did. It's my opinion. :P
Perfect sense.
Now for my not so humble opinion.
Deal with it.
