I used to be able to go into my search queue on the start bar and find them to save them onto my computer, but now it won't let me?

I know it sounds like a stupid question, but how do you download a flash after watching it? Please and thanks...

It's not a stupid question.

Note the id# of the flash you're watching. For instance:

http://www.newgrounds.com/portal/view.php?id=130856

I'm actually sitting here waiting for that movie to be uploaded to the portal (130855 was about 30 mins ago, and so far, no sign of 130856 yet... blah!) at the moment, so it won't work right now prolly.

Anywho, the movie's ID is 130856. The ID# is ALWAYS in the flash file's name, it so happens.

So, I go into the windows start menu, hit find files/folders, and I have it set to search the harddrive where my IE cache folder is located already. So I just type the ID# into the find filename slot, hit enter, and it'll find the file in my browser cache pretty fast. Then I copy the file and paste it into a folder I keep great and sobadIhavetosavethemtoremindmyselfhowbadtheyare flashes from NG.

Sounds more complex than it is, I imagine, but it's the method I go with.

You can also do some right-clickin' down in the send to a friend area to ferret out the file name and all, or just look and see what's listed in the status bar while you click (and hold) the play game/watch movie link back on the main flash page, but... eh.

I think that downloading the .swfs just makes the whole thing looks kind of bad. I don't know. I'd feel guilty ! It's like if you were stealing someone else's work.
Even if it's for your own distraction.

Ummm... they put them on NG so everyone could watch and enjoy them. Or to torture people if they're crap, of course.

What's wrong with saving them to your HD so you can view them without having to DL them from NG? Like when you're offline?

I'm never offline since I have a cable modem connection, but there are times NG won't work, or is laggy, or whatever. Plus I'd forget about a lot of them, even with my fave movie list and all, and a lot of the ones I save are getting blammed, so they may never get protected.

Saving flashes the authors placed in public view is fine... no more damaging than taping your favorite TV program.

Uploading those flashes and claiming them as your own, OTOH, is far from fine. But that's a whole different thing, and shouldn't be assumed to be going on just because someone wants to save some flashes.

I use a easier method. (currently haf over 120 games/movies). Just go to the temporary internet folder (Windows 98 is C:\WINDOWS\Temporary Internet Files) yeah and look for the ones with the numbers at the start and the name of the game after it. The picture should also be different, the copy all of them to anywhere u want and open them with explorer. I use this meathod and it works.

I have a few hundred Flash files on my computer. It's called media collecting, dipstick.

That's pretty much the same thing I said, only I said to use find files/folders instead of browsing through the actual cache folder.

My cache isn't as easy to get to because of the way I have the paths set up, and if I try to go into the cache folder, it takes like a full minute to display all the files sitting in there (large, large cache).

Find files/folders finds a flash movie from NG in less than 10 seconds for me, so... it's faster in my case. YMMV.

I've got 390 or so. And yep. Media collecting is a good term for it. Just like I have dozens of VHS cassettes with TV programs on them.

I just view source, get the link to the file itself, put it somewhere, right click it and save. This is useful if you see a movie that you like but its under judgement and close to being blammed.. because for some reason (at least for me) under judgement movies don't show up in my temporary internet files folder.

Do you know how to get a coon out of a cheese box?

Ah yes, the other method. That is useful when NG occasionally won't display flashes quickly, or at all, which happens to many users (broadband and dialup alike).

I don't know why under judgement movies aren't showing up for you, but it's possible your temp folder has subfolders where under judgement ones hide, perhaps? Try my find files/folder searchbox method and see if you still can't find movies under judgement with nothing but their id# to search by... if you can't, then... the only other thing I can think of is that with some browsers, the filename isn't actually listed as the name of the file in the cache. The cache turns it into some other code-y type thing. Eh. IE doesn't do that, though.

Anyway, under judgement/protected movies are all the same to my find method. eh.

Arhghghghgh. Why why why why WHY?

A) It's not against any NG rules
B) It's not a problem unless you decide to claim it's YOUR work and submit it here or somewhere else and take credit
C) It's fun
D) It's a file in a public place the author WANTED YOU TO HAVE, or he wouldn't have put it on NG

What aren't you and rangi's friend getting about this, eh?! #;-}>

Yeah, i've been doing that since i'm a NG user. Now i've about 500 movies/games in my pc. i also share them with my friends and now they know about NG because of it. Sure it's not a bad way of promoting NG.

Yep. Just as long as you're not charging them for copies of swf-filled CDs or anything. #;-}>

I was talking specifically of just personal use, BTW. If you do distribute tons of swfs to friends and they just play them off the disc and don't go to NG to play them (and thus see advertising that helps the Fulps out), then that ain't too good. But yeah, if they didn't know about NG before and now they do, that's a different matter.

How do you download games and movies from Newgrounds?
Is there a special thing you do or click on to download them?

If you have windows XP it is in System/Document and settings/(Youre user name)/temporary internet files.
I have finally found it!
