Maybe nothing special to you, but I don't see how it's hard to understand the appeal of it. I'm not a big fan of Gears of War, but I certainly understand why fans ate it up.
I think the MGS series is a great example of a game that is good at mixing gameplay with story. Some games are so story driven the gameplay is sacrificed (Mass Effect), and others are so gameplay focused the story is affected (Call of Duty 4). I own both ME and CoD4, so don't think I'm saying the games suck. Mass Effect had some decent gameplay with a compelling story, where there were moments it would draw me in, and I really loved some of the characters, Wrex being one of my favorites. Call of Duty 4 was a fun single player game. I don't normally care for single player in FPS games, but CoD4 kept me interested, and the multiplayer I've committed days to.
I think MGS4 did a good job of balancing fun and unique gameplay with a pretty deep story. Whether or not you connect with the story is another question. It's nice to experience an action based game that isn't an FPS. Also, the MGS has a memorable soundtrack. I think a lot of games neglect creating great music for their games these days. Nothing makes the nostalgia spike like hearing a great video game song. I also think the online aspect of MGS4 is pretty cool. It's a good mix of shooting and stealth, making it one of the more unique online games I've played. I like being able to take someone on with an assault rifle like a third person shooting game, or wait around the corner for a guy and grab him and slit his neck. Fun stuff.
But, different strokes for different folks.
I've been refurbished and reissued, prepackaged and precooked, decontaminated and deloused, but I still smell, sound, look and feel like shit.
