Hey peoples! So basically, me and 2 people Dawn of Dusk and Morgan King are making a game. Now so far its like.. huge epic RPG styled (we can do it!) and i want to get your oppinions on the control scheme.
Keeping to classic EVERY VIDEOGAME ON A CONSOLE controls, (movement on left, actions on right)
we are making this games controls
movement = WASD
Actions = up left down right Arrow keys
(no mouse)
now, would this throw people off as it is a flash game? or does it sound like a spiffy idea? XD

I would prefer moving with the arrow keys and doing actions with WASD but its acceptable.

It will work as long as you put a small amount of instructions built into the game about the controls(remember not everyone reads the instructions)

It works, but I would prefer having them reversed.

This is important...and is also now on UGOPlayer! Go vote for it here, too!

Make those the controls. THAN have a control option where you can either customize the controls, are change it to Arrow keys=movement and wasd = actions.

I'm one of those everyones who don't read instructions, but I don't think it would be hard to figure out the controls.

I love WASD to move, I'm an FPS kinda guy ;), so wasd is way more natural than arrows for me.

it all really depend on wheither or not this would make the game easier. it just seems like it would be both confusing and hard to have two of your fingers on left or right arrows. throught my expreince with game a soild control scheme is key. I think that making it that someone my not be focusing in the keyboard and instead smash the down key a million time by mistake and in a moment of horror notice the game is not responding and boom he's dead and in a fit of rage and confusion he smash the "0" button a million time lower the score. If you feel this would make the game work go ahead and do it.

I love WASD to move when you use the mouse for shooting but using the arrow keys for actions seems odd for me.

Yeah i agree with zrb, unless you have left handed and right handed. Then you can use both

Yeah, all of you have valid points. Thus my reason for starting this thread =D
Basically, from our point of view, just imagine a DS with no shoulder buttons and 1 screen.

4 movements 4 actions
way over here way over here >=D

We kinda want to keep it like that, like all the classic rpg's we grew up with (chrono trigger, legend of dragoon, final fantasy 1-...current)
so basically WASD to move
right arrow = run (hold)
up arrow = menu
down arrow = examine/talk
right arrow = map
(these are field controls)

I'd be open for anybody's ideas, if you could keep it movements left actions right that would be preffered. Thanks for everyones ideas though, keep em coming.

Yeah, now that I think about it, I might create a few things w/ the controls, which allow you to customize the controls, But thats just a possibility.

I will most likely add different control schemes such as "default", "DawnOfDusk" (I like it the way you guys do =D, well, I really don't care for the most part.) and maybe, add a way so you can save your control scheme, but I already gots loads of stuff on my plate (my profile for more info, leave a comment, I respond =D)

maybe change the controls similar to city of heroes and do wasd for movement and the top row of numbers(above most of the keypad) for actions

see now were getting some more ideas =D nice.
i was actually thinking WASD and the other number pad, (far right on the keyboard). But after playing the running around demo..thing.. i've really gotten used to the first way i mentioned.

Well your way is good too but the advantage to the top row of numbers is that the user could control the whole game with one hand(which if you use the mouse in the game works really well)

Interesting, that could also be used as a shortcut to reach other things w/ one hand, main menu, or specific parts of the main menu...

I like it. Ty.
P.S: I'm not sure if I'm still going to use this, just thinking about different possiblities, you know?

What dawn says works, shortcuts to main menu and what not. However controlling the whole game with one hand seems like a big nono to me :P We wont be using the mouse at all. but it would suck for the battle sequences if it was like that. Or just.. really hard to get used to.
Maybe we'll add a custom control setup called "Treerung's controls" XD

I'd like to point out that many laptops don't have the numpad. Also I think wasd works fine as long as the arrows aren't used for anything at all. If I played the game and the arrow key shot a missile or something I'd be really confused for minute. I'd prefer arrows to move and zxcv for actions; that way you'd have a finger for each action and traditional arrow movement. It's sometimes difficult to find wasd without looking but the arrows are in a big open space.

I did not read every post, so I do not know if this was suggested. My suggestion is that you can allow the player to create a custom set of controls.

Ok that's great, giving the options of switching controls will be great.
