This should go in the video game forum. But as long as I'm here, I might as well take a crack at the question.
I think the main reason Shadow is so disliked is because of his similarities to Sonic. He's not actually related to Sonic in any way, and yet he has all of Sonic's abilities. Ultimately, the only intent the designers must have had when creating him was to have a Sonic that was darker and had a backstory. But that really means that Shadow was made just to be a knock-off of Sonic. And Sonic fans dislike the idea of having a knock-oof character within Sonic's own canon.
I personally believe that a more well-received decision would have been to simply give Sonic his own backstory. It would've saved the trouble of creating a new character, and Sonic would be less two-dimensional (figuratively speaking) than he is now.
Actually, when you think about it, it's pretty ridiculous. Sonic is the main character, and yet he is among the characters that have not had any character development at any point in the series. He's mostly a plot device to prevent all hell from breaking loose. I wonder if Sonic Team has ever actually realized this?
