The thing I like about JD, is not so much the drink itself, which is ok don't get me wrong, but the extra's you can get with the Jack Daniels branding. I've got a hearty collection, I'll post a pic later.

Jim Beam's probably my favorite whiskey, but I'll be the first to admit I haven't tried too many.

My friend recently got a really nice Jack Daniel's whiskey glass, with a heavy base and in a square-ish shape (but with rounded corners). As for myself, I have a JD poker set, and a small packet of JD coffee beans, which make some nice coffee, I have to say. Enhances the flavour if you add a drop of whiskey, though ;)

Jim Beam's probably my favorite whiskey, but I'll be the first to admit I haven't tried too many.

I've never actually tried Jim Bean. I'm no expert, by any means, but I've tried a few. Not many people my age drink much whiskey - I'm one of the few.

It didn't take me particularly long to get used to beer. First couple of times I tried it when I was much younger was just the odd sip out of my dad's pint - as you do - but once I started drinking it more regularly I loved it.

Yeah I suppose the transition is a lot easier with beer... although, it does make sense considering wine usually ballparks at around twice or sometimes thrice the alcohol content.

That does sound quite nice actually. Perhaps at Christmas I'll buy a bottle of red and see how much I enjoy it. The people at my local supermarket are actually really helpful with that kind of stuff, though - they have people in the wine section who really know their stuff, and can tell you what wine will go with what foods, etc.

Yeah, asking experts about it is definitely part of getting an enjoyable experience out of it - but you should also kind of know what you're expecting in terms of sweet or dry. That's mainly a preference thing that obviously varies vastly from person to person.

I imagine I'll be drinking a fair amount of cheap wine when I'm at university in september, solely for the purpose of efficiency ;P

Haha, nice. All I can suggest from personal experience is not to mix wine with beer.

I've recently seen a program on 'beer tasting' actually... It was quite interesting, and there was some art to it, but it was let down by the fact that all the experts were old, bearded men wearing rough-looking denim jackets with stomachs hanging over their waistline. Wine tasters tend to look a bit more slick, from what I've seen :)

Yeah, or at least the media wants us to think so. I'm sure there are just as many fatty old wine tasters as there are beer testers.... .... okay, so maybe not. My city is supposed to be having a beer festival sometime soon, and if it weren't so effin' expensive, I'd give some thought to going.

My grandfather is into his whiskey. There's a canadian whiskey called 'Crown Royal' which is really excellent. Also Glennfidditch and Famous Grouse are good. Jack Daniel's is rock & roll, but not the best whiskey ever.

Yeah, Crown Royal is the stuff that we got at the duty free shop. Actually, I think it's one of the cheaper mainstream whiskeys besides JD.

Yeah... it took me a really long time to get properly used to whiskey and the stronger types of rum (not the white rum that tastes like coconut and is only around 25% vol). I was more persistent with those drinks though, and kept coming back to them, which is probably why I like them now. With wine, I never really persisted all that much with it. I'm sure I'll eventually get into it though.

I like the dry aspect of white whine from what I've already tried - it's just the flavour that I was a bit dubious about. Still, with the right meal I'm sure I could start drinking wine more often.

I quit drinking alcohol a long time ago, I think I may be allergic or something. It always gets me sick to the stomach, whether it be an entire handle or rum, or half a can of beer. Headaches are also very constant when I even take as little as a sip or shot. Not only that, but it causes my teeth to ache quite a bit as well. "But you feel so good, and it's fun!". Not really, it just makes me feel bad, so whats the point? I no longer go to parties, or accept beer when someone offers. I've lost a lot of friends this way. Isn't that sad? The way you're all the sudden not cool anymore because you don't drink like everyone else?

Hell, I'm not even 21 yet, and I'm already done with alcohol.

First of all, welcome everyone! =D

Now follows the story of what happened yesterday night, confirming that this club is the place where I belong.
Because, yesterday night was the school prom and we knew it was going to be awesome. Before you ask, yes my date was hot and yes I patted her butt with her consent. But now, to the point. Beer (lager) prize was one euro, which is extremely reasonable, and we had a good time drinking beer (we being everyone I know there).
But at a certain moment, I had received the beer I'd asked and I payed, after which the guy who served me and the rest of the umh, crew, turned back to help some other people getting drunk by serving them alcohol. What do I see in front of me? The bottle of wine they had been serving people who ordered just a glass with. Obviously I take it with me, and I simply walk away, and no one gived a shit. I had just put my hand to a free (half filled) bottle of wine.
Now, you'd say, 'Uhh, I've done that before dude, gtfo!' But no. Because in fact, after that, me and a friend managed to steal another, like, TEN bottles of wine there (sometimes emptier than they should me =/), going to the bar from time to time, and those fuckers didn't even see we were ripping their shizzle. So in total I'd guess we got like 2 bottles of red and 3 of white for free. Plus all the lagers we paid for. Needless to say, drunk night was drunk.

Where do you live dude? Here in Belgium, no one gives a fuck about how old you are when you buy/order booze. Even though I've been drinking legally for over 2 years now :o

Used to be more like that in the UK. The legal age here is 18, but when I was around 16, my friends and I would go to the pub pretty much every week, and we'd never be asked for ID. Those were the good old days...

After I turned 18 though, they started cracking down on underage drinking around where I lived. I managed to narrowly escape the whole crackdown and resume my drinking habits as normal... but I did feel a bit sorry for the people who were about a year younger then me. Not too much though, obviously, as I was able to drink to my heart's content ;P

Yus, I heard that the UK is a bitch on the drinking 'issue'. When we went there with our school, the teachers were like 'OH MY FUCKING GOD DON'T YOU FUCKING TRY TO BUY ALCOHOL YOU'LL END UP ON A PLANE HOME WTF'. When I went back later with my parents, wa got kicked out of a bar because I wasn't 21. Like, what the fuck, 21? Maybe they were stricter because this happened in London and I suppose the countryside people are a little more 'tolerant'.

(Or until I ran out of money)

The eternal problem... The money in general isn't a problem to me, but I usually end up finishing the night with empty pockets and asking people for drinks =P

Heh, yep. They make a big fuss about it here these days. The problem is the society, if you ask me. In a lot of European countries, the legal age is 16 (but 18 for hard spirits), and I've never noticed any teenagers causing trouble out on the streets whenever I've visited those places.

I get the feeling then in the UK, if they were to lower the legal drinking age, the problem teenagers that we already have would simply get worse, as it would be easier for them to get their hands on alcohol.

That's stupid. There are certain places that only allow in people who are over 21 now, though, in the interest of the establishment promoting a more "mature" atmosphere. Most pubs anywhere aren't like that, it's usually the bars and clubs.

Also, the government were thinking of passing some legislation that doesn't allow shops to sell alcohol to under 21's at the weekend. I don't think it ever went through... but still, what a joke.

Money is going to be a problem for me over the next 4 years at university. I've spoken to a lot of my friends who've just finished their first year, and they've been telling me how they didn't budget too well and ended up spending more than the sum total of their loan. BUDGET TIME.

To be honest, I have seen quite a lot of drunk teenagers on the street being idiots here. Raising the drinking age wouldn't be a solution though, because as I said nobody cares about the drinking age here. But they're not causing real trouble, they're just stumbling around shouting and falling over.

I get the feeling then in the UK, if they were to lower the legal drinking age, the problem teenagers that we already have would simply get worse, as it would be easier for them to get their hands on alcohol.

Hmm, I think lowering the drinking age would always be a problem, right =P

Hmm, I can understand what they want, but that's a bit stupid. The atmosphere mostly depends on the people you're actually drinking with, not the people elsewhere in the pub/bar/whatever.

Also, the government were thinking of passing some legislation that doesn't allow shops to sell alcohol to under 21's at the weekend. I don't think it ever went through... but still, what a joke.

That would've been like making a law stating it should be broken at all cost, seriously.

Money, a problem at the uni? Shit, I'm going to uni next year, so I better start budgetting as well =P

Very true. It's easy enough already in this country, with kids as young as 14 sometimes able to get served. I've been able to get served since I was 16, and have a mate who managed it at 14/15. If all else fails, there's always someone willing to buy kids there drink, in exchange for a few quid or something.

I'm guilty of that myself actually, I've bought kids in exchange for a ten pack of tabs or a four pack of beer. I'll usually argue with myself over it. Is it wrong because I'm encouraging the underage drinking, then again, I'm still underage myself. And I remember how hard it was for me when I was younger.

Also, the government were thinking of passing some legislation that doesn't allow shops to sell alcohol to under 21's at the weekend. I don't think it ever went through... but still, what a joke.

One of the dumbest things I've ever heard. One of two things would happen, sales revenue for off-licenses would drop by a huge margin or 16-21's would wise up and buy there alcohol on Thursdays... Pointless idea if you ask me.

Some sort of Smirnoff Ice variety? I hate that kind of crap. I used to think it was ok back in the day, these days however I barely see it as alcohol. It's so easy to simply knock back and really dosen't seem to get me drunk :/

Dry eh? Good man.
If you wanna just dive into the bold stuff, I'd have no problem recommending some good old Wolf Blass (Australian) - not too expensive either. Jumping up a bit in price, you could also try some Californian Red if you can get your hands on it. I haven't tried too many of these, but we usually go with either Merlot or Cab. Sauv. and they offer a pretty smooth taste for a red. Eagle Peak maybe? I'm afraid to recommend cause I don't know enough bout the stuff. For some cheap stuff that's pretty modest in taste you could go with Valpolicella (Italy), we usually pick that up when we just wanna get a cheap buzz for a party. My personal opinion is that if you go for French or Italian reds, either go for the cheap stuff or the expensive stuff.. the mid-range stuff is usually crap.

Urgh... :/

The only two times I threw up during the semester were due to mixing mayhaps. The worst one was with sake, sangria, and beer. It burned coming back up.

Heh. I'd love to go to a beer festival one day... I can only imagine how severely drunk I'd get.

Man... when I think about it, I'm actually pretty sure they make the beer samples extremely expensive so that people can't get drunk. Unless you're an extreme lightweight...

Yeah, I don't think it's TOO expensive. I think it's a bit more expensive than JD, but it's smoother and comes in a nicer bottle. I'd buy it if we got that over here, but unfortunately we don't. The only reason I've tried it is because my friend's dad went over to Canada a few times and bought some back with him, and he invited us to sample it with him.

Good stuff. Hey, is there anything like that in the UK ? What would be the equivalent or something similar in costs and maybe quality to Crown Royal?

Ahh, that makes sense I suppose. I'm not really that much of a lightweight, although there was a period a few months ago where I didn't drink very much, and when I started resuming my usual level of drinking, it got to me much faster. Still, I know some people who will be absolutely wasted after 2 or 3 pints. :/

Good stuff. Hey, is there anything like that in the UK ? What would be the equivalent or something similar in costs and maybe quality to Crown Royal?

Hmm... I think maybe Famous Grouse would probably be the closest equivalent. It's good quality, and not too expensive last time I checked. Probably a shade more expensive than JD.

Beer festival you say? GOD, you should live where I live!

My youth club organizes the yearly 'Beerfest', which is the fucking best thing ever. It happens the first weekend of May, and lasts two days:
Friday is kind of a huge cafe where we propose like 30 brands of beer, and for normal prizes. Getting drunk IS easy if you want, but it's not a problem if you want to savor the beers either.
Saturday then, are just a few bands playing and regular lager drunkenness, after which there's a huge party. And that is the best fucking weekend of your life.

Hey can I join?
I'm 15 and becoming 16 (which is the legal drinking age for beer, wine and other not so heavy drinks where I live) in September this year.
I'm from Switzerland and like smooth English Ale, Heineken, Weissbier, Wine, Champagne etc.
Anyway I love two things: The cheap Champagne my "Drinking Group" buy for easy cheap drinking and just mellowing down on a bench with mates with one bottle of Wine just to myself (that just gets me to that nice stage of mellow slight Drunkenness, you know what I mean ;) )
