I'm not a very experienced coder, but I know a thing or two about design. I picked up a book about Actionscript 3.0 but I was wondering how many people use it and if it is worth it to learn or if I should stick to 2.0. I'm relatively new so I don't know much about each. Can anyone tell me what I should do?

Idk. I use AS 2.0 for my games, and I love it.
I would say stick with as2.

A lot of people use. More importantly, you need to know if you yourself need it. The difference is an improved API, proper exception throwing and the fact that it runs much faster. Do you need any of that? More simply, do you find the silently dynamic nature of AVM1 is an obstactle for your coding?

I really enjoy AS3. However, if I am on Linux, I use AS2, since Flash CS3 is not fully supportive with WINE yet, and I would not wish to use something like Flash Develop, as I can not use the full Flash IDE with Flash Develop.

PHP: Main | AS: Main | AS3: Main | Get Firefox
I know that "Internet" is mispelled.

Well, AS2 is easier to use, but I find AS3 gives a better result. But the problem is that if there is 1 small fault in your code, none of it works. So if you have the guts to learn it, I would suggest it.

Your mission is to fail this mission, do you accept?

I don't think FD works on Mono well last I heard, but you can use Flash fully with Flex (so FD). Embedding assets. I don't use CS3 either.

Actually, why stick to something you are good at.
We as programmer/designers should be very outgoing and learning
new technology as we speak.
So you mastered AS 2.0
Its time to take a leap,

Biggest benefits of using As 3 is that once u get it, you can use javascript 2 also ;)
think of it two birds and one stone

Improved API? You must be talking about Flex or something, because the CS3 workspace is a downgrade from flash 8. It's laggy and buggy and forgets where windows were placed and how big they were. The auto-format is useless, too, because it just screws up your code. I miss Flash 8 a lot, to be honest.

True, it does need some improvements if not lots. But Flex builder does help a lot, yes.

Not IDE, API. As in the language API. The framework.

If you can do it with AS2, why spending hours to make it with AS3 ? :D
obvious, it doesnt hurt if you know AS3, but AS2is good enough ^^

Oh, yeah, I always mix those up. The IDE sucks. They'll probably improve that with flash Diesel though.

No no, even Adobe says that you should learn as 3. Only losers keep on using a deprecated language. Yup, Adobe have deprecated the full as 2 language.
As 3 is plain better.

And it is a good thing that it does not work at all if there is an error. The alternative sucked. Hunting for the error is the worst part in debugging.

I used to recommend my article about php security, but my server is down, so all I say is: ActionScript version 2 sucks big time! Go learn ActionScript version 3 already!

AS3 Nazi! You can turn off compiler errors, though, so I forgive you.

Well I personaly have found it way more efficaint then AS2 however I would suggest you learn both AS2 and AS3. If you want to make thing complex but organized I'd use AS3 but if your going to do a simple cartoon with a preloader and a play button stick to AS2. But Clearly AS3 is harder to understand then AS2, but if you think your ready for it go ahead and to it.
