That's a huge game, especially for a beginner. There's not necessarily a guide on making everything either, so based on what you want your game to do, like, fighting/adventure, use google to look up some tutorials for Flash. Nothing is impossible, and good luck.

Cool, but I think your
"dream" can be placed in one topic.

I'm in the process of making mine. But you can't do it in one big swoop and just be done with it.

You have to start at the basics, make small tests to test what you've learned, apply it to your game and continue. When you reach the next thing that you've never done before, you read up on it, make a test, learn it and then apply it to your game.

And so on, and so on.

:)

start by making a frame for the game i.e. VERY simple objects for each item you want (a square for the character, a black square for a barrier, a simple arrow to get to the next area etc.) then add detail and movieclip animation to make it look more professional. Sounds awesome too! If you need help contact me. I probably cant do much but I would love to be a part of this!

Currently attempting to pwn balls at making a game... awesome!

on(key.isdown(keycode)){
_root.gotoAndPlay(frame)
}

Now I don't know how to damage an enemy with that attack, I think you have to use hittest.

Test for echo

gotoAndStop(3);

_x +=speed
}else if (Key.isDown(Key.LEFT)) {

xP do some tuturials or get a book before you ask... ask on code that you made and isnt working. . .

ain't about how hard you hit... It's about how hard you can get hit, and keep moving forward... how much you can take, and keep moving forward.

Yeah, no kidding, the load time would be huge.
50 Stages, that's 50 different backgrounds. All with lots of mc's on it, most probably wouldn't be reused much, 300 characters, that's 300 animations and stuff.
At least, if you think about it seriously.

Have you even dabbled in flash? If you havent I doubt you are going to make this game. It is to big for a beginner. (I consider myself a beginner too) it sounds cool but way to big, I doubt you are going to get it to be 10 MB it will be way over. And to get special permission to submit it is really hard, it has to be really good quality. Which it wont have since you are a beginner. I just think it is too hard and you wont finish it, sorry to crush your "dream game."

You could load them externally, I guess. But I don't see why you would want 300 - I can't think of any games, including commercial games, that have that many.

Truly he has a point, but some things he has off, so I get to argue it =D
His point: Your a beginner (true) and you won't make this game (not true) and your file size will be WELL over 10MB (true, but does a "dream game" have to be limited to Newgrounds?)

My point: Your a beginner (already established), You can make this game (true, but if you want it to be anything memorable, you might want to practise on some other "weaker" projects before you finish this game), You file size, even w/ streaming sound, will be prolly a lil over 10MB, depending on what you add in the game, if this "dream" game is what it's cooped up to be though, Tom will allow it through the portal. And if it's to big, Well get permission by the companies your using the sprites from and the companies who the players belong to, cut em some % of profit, and call of XBLA (although regardless, I don't think it will go that far...)

I don't know any games, stories or anything with more than even 50 characters.. Maybe if you actually thought out a storyline you'd have a better idea of what you'd need? Games with no plot or story will generally suck more.

:D

Quality > quantity.

What's the use of having 300 characters if the player gets bored after 2 characters?

Well I honestly dont think it will be good enough to get through the portal (quality and graphic wise) I dont think the characters will be good. And you should practice before you jump in to a huge project. Maybe if you should us some of your work it will give us an idea of what it will look like.

Isn't that basically what I said?

Saying you want 1,000 characters in a game is a large feat, but if you can fit it into the context of the game then knock yourself out. You just have to focus on game design rather than ambitious goals. If your game is weak but your cast is large, who is going to care?
