k so I deleted a whole bunch of seemingly useless shit from the root of my C drive and stuff, and now windows won't boot, it just restarts my computer. You'd think that a file written in all caps like a fucking 2 year old typed it, last modified sometime in 2003 wouldn't be necessary, right? Nope..

Thankfully I didn't clear out the recycle bin, but since windows has such a fucktarded way of storing the deletion queue, I can't find out the original filenames and locations(but I do get the extentions) of the junk, they are encrypted in some unreadable jargon.

What should I do newgrounds?

You deleted essential files required for starting up.

The only thing you can do is either install a different OS, reinstall Windows, or replace the files you deleted.

Yay
Isn't it lovely that when the audio contest I've been begging for a whole year comes up, the judges automatically disqualify me

Im not sure just saying that.

yeah that's why I don't delete much off the C drive cos chances are when you think it's useless it actually isn't and is in fact essential , your case is a prime example ^^

If you are oblivious to the face he makes with each post, and how he mercilessly slaughters a dead horse with each post.

Then you're going to see my point.

I'm trying to do the latter, I already got ubuntu set up but I like the option of windows to use stuff my virtualbox install of it with a fraction of the specs can't handle or can't access. I have an install CD but the serial can't be used again without... doing things. Plus it's SP1 and built for a dell laptop which died ages ago, lol.

Stupid thing is neither my virtual install nor my parent's copy of vista has these files or anything like them, and yes I selected "view hidden files". I'm gonna try copying the recycle bin folders into the VM and restoring them there :(

get a friend to bring a computer over and wire your hard drive into his machine. Boot windows and load your hard drive as a partition. Go into your trashcan from windows on his machine, select all the crap you deleted, right click, and hit restore. Try booting again using your hard drive. If you can't get to them that way, or if you deleted them from DOS, try doing a system restore to a point before you deleted them. If that doesn't do it, call tech support, cause you fucked things up royally.

FIXED IT!

Loaded up virtual windows in ubuntu, found an option to show system files, copied the seemingly useless but vital files(CONFIG.SYS, CLASSES.1ST, IO.SYS, MSDOS.SYS, ntdetect.com... the .com led me to believe it was crapware or some kind of advert... boy was I wrong)

Now to delete some more shit and boot back into ubuntu and not use windows for another few months!

Thanks for the moral support, suggestions and bestality while I dealt with this, newgrounds.

Your C: should have the following files in it (not including folders):

AUTOEXEC.BAT
boot.ini
CONFIG.SYS
IO.SYS
MSDOS.SYS
NTDETECT.COM
ntldr
pagefile.sys

If it does not have all of those, your system will not boot. I recommend using your XP installation CD to perform System Recovery.

Yes, because I do an awesome face, or a variation of it (yes, variation, i.e. something different) every time I post don't I?

Don't you have some medication to take?

it could be possible to repair it by putting in the windows install cd in the drive, restarting and booting from it. not too sure how to do it but eventually you get to a part where it asks you to repair windows. try looking it up on google or wikihow
