homemade AK47

ok well, ive been working on a little side project for the past...well... since yesterday. its a model of an ak47, unfortunately it doesnt shoot nor will it ever shoot, just wanted to get that out of the way now.

ok now my current situation is:

i have made the basic body. i still need to clean it up a bit, add some color and detail, and some movable parts. also this is the first time i have made anything like this so feel free to give me some tips, thanks.

PS: the magazine is removable :)

foam boards, i was going to make it out of cardboard but something about foam between two thick paper sides seems tougher and they are easier to glue together.

Pretty cool, you should paint it to make it look like an AK-47. It would look a lot better.

You should make it a little bit thicker.

its about half an inch thick now, i think it will get thicker once i start adding color. im thinking about wrapping it in construction paper or painting it, either way its sure to get thicker.

It looks nice, but jeez... The AK47 was created two years after World War 2 ended by Russia. xD And still is being appreciated by many and used throughout the black market. Fun. Anyways- I agree by making it thicker. I would paint it if I were you, construction paper looks cheap and paper models are outdated now a days.

I would like to see the final product.

yep, the Kalashnikov is a mighty weapon, its amazing that its still popular even after so many years. anyways ill be updating this frequently so check back soon if you want to see my steps and this thing in its final state.

The reason it's so mighty is that it's simple, and almost never jams, not to mention that it actually works in deserts, which is a huge plus to terrorists. It's my favorite gun, though. Back in Russia I have 2 of them, they fire excellently, but the recoil is pretty powerful. When I first fired an AK-47 I was 5, and the thing knocked me over. It's too bad that the automatic version isn't available here in the US... because there's no sensation quite like firing an AK nonstop. Memories aside, that's a pretty accurate model, but there's something wrong with the top part... Good job, I look forward to seeing this finished.

When I was a kid I made an AK out of wood with my grandpa. It looked pretty accurate. From far away it looked just like a real one. I wish I knew where it was. Maybe I'll make a new one.

bump, so i have decided to use paint on the AK, anyone know any cheap brands? i dont want to use my acrylic, that shit is expensive. i dont want to use bad paint either, keep that in mind. im thinking about just going to the store and finding something cheap, but if you guys have any other ideas than feel free to comment.

oh and here is a little something to keep the bump legal. magazine off...

no actually the front of the gun or should i say barrel, of the gun is thinner than the rest of it, i felt that it would look more realistic that way (even though its not round.)

Why is that big rectangle on the top of the body of the gun? I'm assuming you did one of 2 things.

1. You Google image'd "AK47" and took the first picture you saw, but it's pretty pointless to make that rail on there if there's nothing attached to it.

2. You don't quite know what an AK looks like, but you can get a basic figure in your head so you dove into the project without any research.

Judging by the shape of the stock (upside down?), the long, narrow body, and some other proportional errors, I'm going to say you didn't do your homework. Next time you should study more and try to get the right shape.

yea i guess i should have studied more but this is my first try and i have other things going on right now. (i know excuses, excuses.) thanks for actually helping btw, learn from your mistakes right?

Yeah, it's looking much better. The back of it (forgot the name of the recoil thingy) could be polished up a bit more. Smoothened out in other words.

ok, added color, and thats all im going to do, ive already graded this as a huge fail but i mean at least it somewhat looks like an AK, and it is the right size so i guess it came out pretty nice. if i make another one of these. ill be sure to actually spend more time on it.

anyway project over, im going back to painting my little paintings, discuss if you find it necessary.

What kind of paint did you use?

Because I think if you use a spray paint with a gloss to it, it would a lot nicer.

How about for your next project you use wood? You could have used some wood for the stock and the grip thing, it would look so much more realistic. The "metal" parts you should have used a glossy spray paint. Maybe put a varnish over it for a little shine?
