Preacher people at funerals .-. and because I don't think an atheist would want the mentioning of 'Silly Ideas' at the honoring of his life if he's atheist
This is only from my experiences...

I see no conflict in this thread. You just say "so and so was a great fella for all these reasons....." than dump his ass in and go get dinner.

Semi-Religious Funeral: "So and so was a good man. And God..."

Tip: the vast majority of atheists hate people who do shit like that.
For the most part, we see separation of church and state as a safeguard to maintain a free society, not as a pissing match where we try to rack up as many anti-religion points as possible.

It'll go something like this;
"He had miserable life full of fear and uncertainty and now he is dead, and I mean FUCKING DEAD; pitch-black dead. His corpse will rot in the soil and, eventually, his very existence will be forgotten, never to resurface again."

Yeah, I know. I just wish there were more stories of the Westburo Church to make of.

It still amazes me how many court cases they win, no matter how small the number.

No, I mean it surprises me how many court cases they all win. I read that story, and the kid should've lost. As the courts have demonstrated, the school has a different set of rules and regulation to follow than what an individual would outside a business or school setting.
The school has a code that anything that would cause a major disturbance in the school system can be taken away by the school (using common sense of course). His shirt should've been taken, as well as the mary jane shirt lawsuits as well.
Though I don't think anyone should have a problem with an article of clothing that has religious symbols on them, such as a cross, or maybe a picture of Buddha, so long as they don't outright attack another's beliefs or simply attack others in general.

why would an atheist have a religious funeral in the first place? and if that person's friends and family believed in God, i'd hope they would mention God (in a good way of course).

The justice system is fucked up, a little thing called common sense needs to be beaten into it.
Common sense isn't so common anymore

I'm pretty sure that a sensible atheist would want to be cremated, since technically a natural death would involve restoring one's own resources into the ground; of course burial doesn't make this possible and neither does cremation, but at least cremation doesn't require as much space.
as for funeral rights? The most practical thing would be to celebrate the physical legacy of the individual who died; though i don't think the regular westerner is that superficial; not yet at least.

It's for demographic purposes. It's just like how there's a category for people who don't go skiing.

Yeah, because believing in a fictional character as your creator isn't a kooky concept?
I mean why the fuck is there a category for people who don't believe in a god?
That's called freedom my friend. I understand you god fearing folk don't believe in personal freedom, as your lives are dictated through a story book. That and we don't have to pay cash for our beliefs.
Atheist Funeral: All your friends and family gather at your resting place of choice, say a bunch of nice things about you, and as mentioned above, go get some dinner.
Injured Workers rights were taken away in the 1920's by an insurance company (WCB), it's high time we got them back.

Without a catagory for people who dont believe, there cant be a catagory for people who do. Surely you understand the light and dark concept? If the dark did not exist we would not have a reason or a way to define or classify light.

I dunno, I'm kind of on the fence when it comes to cremation vs. traditional burial. Both have their various pros and cons. When I die, I'll want my body disposed of in such a way that it causes as little harm to the enviroment as possible. I'll also make sure that my burial/cremation is planned well in advance to make sure that the vultures of Death Incorporated aren't scamming my family into buying expensive extras that are completely superfluous and unnecessary.
Other than that, I don't really care how my body is disposed of. As long as it's enviroment friendly and cheap, I'm happy.
Oh yeah, and they have to play The Return of the Space Cowboy by Jamiroquai at the funeral. No sappy organ music allowed.

I don't really see what the problem here would be. You just talk about the person and what he stood for and believed in, just like any other funeral. If he did believe in God, good, you can talk about his belief in God. If he didn't believe in God, then God doesn't have to enter into it.
Funerals are really more for the people the person leaves behind than the actual person him or herself. It's an important part of saying goodbye, and if someone wants to look to God to help them deal with that when I die, I won't begrudge them for that.

Well, do you believe nothing exploding into a everything a good explination? Do you honestly believe that such design could be made by accident? If you think my belief is trash then you might as well think that but I'm not changing my belief because every religion thread has people shooting missles at my door trying to insult my beliefs.

;
No one who has any clue ( the scientists & engineers) looking into the Big Bang , has ever said "everything came from nothing "
No , only 'god fearing' so called "faithful" religious people say that.
It probably comes from their understanding of ,something that is incomprehensible to most people.
Since their understanding is (in my opinion) less than 0% (that's right they haven't got a clue) they all , each & everyone of them ! Can only invision it as NOTHING.
But tell me this , why are you religious people 'all god fearing' individuals?
Are you really so stupid that you need an all powerful being who has threatened you with an eternity of damnation, if you refuse to bow down to the wishes of the leaders of your "faith" ; to be able to get through your lives ?
So what exactly are you afraid of ?
That your God is threatening you with eternal damnation ; has he spoken to you personally ,lately?
That the leaders of your religion are threatening you with a possible eternal punishment, by God , IF you don't do as they tell you ?
That kind of "faith" my friends is completely incomprehensible to me & I understand it 0% .
Stupidity, & totally inane behaviour , just because eveyone around you is acting that way , changes nothing about the stupidity at all. - More

I believe, correct me if I am wrong, that Christians are not supposed to judge others unfairly.
I have no problems with atheists in fact I have many friends who are atheist and we always talk about religion somehow we keep it FRIENDLY.
Why do so many 'God Fearing' individuals Judge Atheists unfairly, if they truly feared god they would listen to him and not judge them at all.
If they want to burn in what they consider a "non existing hell" LET THEM!
God gave us free will so I suggest you use it for a more useful thing than yelling at others who don't think the way you do.
and the whole "if they want to burn..." thing wasn't meant as an insult to Atheists my apologies If I offended you with that.

My family is very religious. I'm sure god will be mentioned at my funeral. I really don't care, the funeral is for my friends and family. I'll be gone, no way for me to care any more and it's not like anyone is gonna hear someone mention god at my funeral and people are going to think "Oh so he wasn't an athiest!"

What am I, a vampire? =P
Besides, I'm not saying all organ music is "sappy", just that I don't want any "sappy" organ music played at my funeral. Every single funeral I've been to has had really depressing organ music that feels almost DESIGNED to make you feel sad. I don't want that.
What I want is, if not outright happy, then at least uplifting songs. I mean look at these lyrics:
Everything is good, and brown
I'm here again
With a sunshine smile upon my face
My friends are close at hand
And all my inhibitions
Have disappeared without a trace
I'm glad that I found
Somebody who I can rely on
These are lyrics designed to make you feel better, in my oppinion. The rule at my funeral will be that it's ok to cry, just as long as you have a smile on your face. People should remember the happy memories; not be coaxed into feeling depressed.
