If you had an awesome idea for a flash game, and you gave it to someone who made a game of your idea, and then the game got sponsored, would you claim a part of the money then? If so, how many percents?

There is no definate answer to that kind of thing. It's up to the parties involved to sort out.

Yes, and therefore I ask for different opinions on it... What would you do

In the real gaming industry, hundreds of ideas are submitted to companies daily. If a company likes the idea they take it and make it into a game. But unless you had a part with ANY process of the game development (EX. Programming, Animation, Graphics) you don't see a dime. So all you can really do is pat yourself on the back for having a good enough idea to be made into a game.

As I said before, it's for the involved parties to sort out. It all depends on the situation. I have no idea what your situation is like so how can I possibly pass on helpful judgement? This is something to discuss with whoever made your idea a reality.

What would I do? I wouldn't bother asking for advice from other people who aren't involved and I would discuss it with whoever is involved.

Unless you want to describe the whole situation in intimate detail, no-one here can really help you.

Thanks. Well, the situation just was kind of a bet.. A friend told me that he got a great idea for a game, and if I made it, he wanted 50% (Lol, I know), I said that that was just insane, but he said it was a good deal... Therefore I was posting it here, so that I could show him this thread.

Then tell the freeloader to sit down, crack open a text book, and start learning flash or AS3 cause 50% is outrageously unreasonable. If you buy the man lunch some time I'd consider that generous of you.

Yeah, it depends entirely on the individuals involved. Most people are greedy. So ...unless you had something worked out beforehand, the most you can probably expect is your name in the credits, if that.

Consider it a lesson learned.

...it's criminal!

I'd say the person with the idea gets nothing.

Everybody has ideas, but not everybody can make games so it's kinda redundant to reward common ability :|

I actually offered him 10%, but he wanted 50, so he's the one being greedy!

If all you did was come up with the idea for the game, and the other person did ALL code and animation and such, then you probably only deserve about 10-15%.
An idea is something anyone can have, but then it's all the hard work on the other end that makes the idea worthwhile.

GAH!

The man should be happy if you lend him a bus fare home. Ideas come to everyone all the time. Actual development takes hours and hours of solid, tedious work.

A rate of change in sanity with respect to time.

Ideas are just thoughts you can't put a copyright on a thought unless its made into a product of some sort.

I think it depends a great deal on 1) how well thought out the idea is and 2) how involved he is with production. If he just says "Hey, you should make a movie about bananas that kill people!" and then you make it, that's worth diddly squat. If you're in more of a situation like mine, where I offered up an original concept, 10 pages of background information, about 8 fully fleshed out character concepts, a major story arc as well as details for the first three episodes of the series, then that should be worth something, at least 10% if not 50% or more.

oh woops, you said 'game' not 'movie'... well, I think the idea still stands. If he sits with you and works out the little details then that should be worth something. Otherwise, if it's just an idea, squat.

Yes, I agree with you. It depends on how much he's helping you with the project.
