Anybody remember getting these papers at the end of school. Telling you to read 2 - 4 books over summer vacation? I used to hate that. Who still has to do summer reading?

Over here the summer means the end of all scholar activities.

I used to at my old school. Since I had already read most of the Harry Potter series, I would just mark those down as read, because they counted for more than one book.

4 books would take me around 4 weeks to read. I'm talking about decent sized books from up to 200-300 pages here.

but when you HAVE to read something because the school tells you to, it takes alot of the enjoyment out of it....also they tend to assign really terrible books

I hate it, and they still make us do it.

Summer is the only time I ever read. I've still got a few books from Christmas I've not read yet, I never have time when I'm at college. I've had 3 unread Michael Crichton books, the first Discworld book, and Dune. I'll probably not read Dune, though, because I tried about half a year ago, and it was so fucking boring I gave up on it.

I can happily read a 300-400 page book in a day if I'm taking a train journey or I'm on a flight or something, though I don't really see reading as a chore - it's something I enjoy and do for myself.

When I was in second grade, my teacher told us that if we read thirty books in the summer, we'd get a prize. I did.

It was a tiny plastic dinosaur. I was pissed. >:C

Never had to do any of the sort, but I get through four or five books every week, anyway. What's wrong with a little reading once every day? If it's only between two and four books for the entire summer break, then that's not tough at all.

Casually reading should get that done in two weeks or less.

I've never been told to read anything over the summer.

My attention span isn't good enough to read full length novels anyway. I like to read short stories with more meaning.

usually they are specific books assigned by different classes. it always sucks to read something somebody else is making you read. also, they almost always come with an assignment or project that you have to complete upon finishing the book. overall, summer reading can become a very time consuming thing. nobody wants to have an assignment they have to do when they are at camp or on vacation

Never had to do that. But I read a shit ton anyway. One cool thing was I read a book over the summer one year and then I went to school and they assigned that book in English. I had like no homework every day.

I have to read "The Sound and The Fury" and "The Joy Luck Club" over the summer for AP Writing and Composition.

Read my story, "The Free Man." It's got furries, philosophy, and romance!

Nope, I think when I was in Primary School, they asked us to read in the holidays but they never checked if we had when we came back. Never a specific report to write either, expect in GCSE English but that wasn't for over the summer.

Half the people that have summer reading don't even bother reading the books. I myself have been guilty of such, by only reading (thoroughly) the Cliff's Notes for the book.
