What do all of you think will be the next peice of technology or technological/scientific breakthrough that will hit the world. Also, what does the world (I repeat, world, not just America) need in terms of technology? When do you expect to see both of these?

In all seriousness.... advanced cryogenic technology, maybe allowing for eventual resuscitation ala Eric Cartman in South Park.

If I had to guess, it would be fusion for power generation.

There's a mushroom that turns garbage into ethanol.
That's pretty interesting.
Lots of potential in genetics. I think that it is by far the most promising sector of technology.
Not only can you cure human diseases, but you can make better food, better animals and most important: micro-ogranism that do amazing things they couldn't do in nature like digest plastics, turn some kind of waste into energy/a good product etc.

Further advances in miniaturisation and genetic modification, similiar to the steady increase in complexity of computers.
It is unlikely that physics will advance that much, we have exhausted decades and trillions of £s in research by teams of scientists and have not discovered anything nearly as fruitful as semi-conductors, microwaves or nuclear power. While we have discovered things like ceramic superconductors we haven't found anything that can give new life to the economy. If there are any new technologies waiting for us they aren't easy to find. We are at the stage where development is more fruitful than research.

Definitely so. With fusion the oil problem is moot.

The next major advance will probably be a more efficient way of harnessing solar.
As it stands you need to buy $2000 worth of solar panels just to run a PS3. You'd need an extra $1000 worth of solar panels to power the TV.
That's a whole lot of money for just a little bit of appliance... Now imagine if you could power your entire house with solar panels. That would be a real revolution.

Ok, now for a few follow up questions. The rest of you that are looking at this for the first time can anwser the first few as well as these.
What new technology would benefit you the most?
If you could create any technology that fits into the realm of science in one year, which would you pick and why?
Which problems do you think we can and can not solve with technology?

These are starting to sound like high school essay test questions...
Anyway, the use of bio-tech and stem-cell research to regrow tissue, nerves, and possibly limbs stands out as a new technology that could change the world rather drastically in the near future. That and genetic manipulation to lower instances of genetic defects like Taysachs... and god only knows what else they may be able to do with it.
Battery tech will also become extremely important in the years to scome, as it will be the choke point that determines the efficiency and cost of electric/hybrid/fuel cell cars.
Tis better to sit in silence and be presumed a fool, than to speak and remove all doubt.

Fusion power will be big in terms of energy production, and fuel cells will be very important in storing and releasing the energy in a portable, environmentally responsible way.

Anti gravity belts. Rigging at height will become a breeze.
If you could create any technology that fits into the realm of science in one year, which would you pick and why?

I would devote everything into batteries. Particularly on the capacity of storage, size ,and long life with thousands of recharges being a very important consideration.
Which problems do you think we can and can not solve with technology?
I don't think technology is going to help rid this planet of the problems caused by religious groups.
Although if said extremist religious group was all in one localized area, the technology of nuking them could conceivably take out this plague on mankind ;-)

Genetical combat enhancement. This will allow a soldier to be a lot stronger and what not. With this you wouldn't have to send in as many troops thus dropping the casualty amounts dramatically.
It can take a hundred days to make one ally, but it can take only one day to make a hundred enemies.

Soon enough we will have quantum computing! http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Quantum_com puter
And bio computing will eventually surpass that maybe http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wetware_com puter
These will help advacne research in all areas.
ALso other things such as The Neutrino Underground Experiment http://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/200 5/03/050307215203.htm will hopefully answer a few things about the universe. Genetics could really benifit in loads of places now. But it has been outlawed internationaly so its benifits will never be feil untill restrictions are lifted!

Hmm, it seems to me that most people seem to think major breakthroughs are going to come in scientific research fields.
I am more inclined to believe that consumer products will be more of the leading edge.
That wasn't really worded clearly, I hope you understand my meaning.

Actually, most of what we know about hypothermia came out of Nazi Germany Human experiments. THey were trying to figure out how to give their sailors & submariners an edge so they could survive in the cold North Atlantic waters.
They were also using humans to literally stand outside in the freezing cold until they almost died & then brought inside to see how they could be effectively warmed back up.
This was because of the harsh winter weather on the Eastern Front (Russian front).
I remember the Hypothermia info, because it was taught in life boat drill & my helicopter dunk tank survival course.
So no matter how dispicable & terrible such a testing method is/was. THat information is being used today to help save lives...small consolation for sure.
But at least it wasn't all for nothing.

Flywheels are also an amazing technology that's being developed. I worked at an R&D facility through my university as an undergraduate research assistant. They were doing some amazing things with flywheels, from application to the International Space Station, to locomotives, to railguns. The premise is that the flywheel stores power as kinetic energy that is available on tap.
Think you're pretty clever...
