It takes the crane about 30 seconds for me to swing the crane 360 degrees.

More if I'm swinging into the wind and less if the opposite is true.

I wish. I would always stare at them when the obligatory Toys R Us catalog arrived around Christmas time. My parents could never afford to buy me one....

How many times have you almost fallen.

If at all. Or just moments where you were like, unbalanced up there. Even if you're not near the edge.

Iunno you said you get used to it though.

how nervous were you your first day :P

Heres a question for ya, Poozy. What would it be like operating one of those fuckers in the cold? You're lucky to be in Miami, but here in Canada, shit gets damn nippy.

I've almost fallen twice off of my jib while inspecting and maintaining it.

Well here in Miami. During the Winters, the temperature dips to 20-30 degrees Fahrenheit. That coupled with the humidity makes it pretty damn cold. Cold enough to where I have to turn the heater on and wear warm clothing at least.

Do you have to climb up a ladder everytime you go up there or is there a lift thing?

If there's a ladder how long does it take and do you then never come down during the whole day until the end of your shift? Bet you must want a toilet in that Compartment...

What's the longest you've ever been in the crane at once?

You said you had a CB for talking to other cranes. is that only other cranes at your specific work site, or do you talk to other operators throughout the range of your radio? if so, what type of community do you guys have. Is it sort of like a brotherhood where you meet up with other crane operators from other places for drinks, or you have worked in the same city for long enough you've begun to regularly work with/near some of the same guys?

On some types of cranes the ladder is a straight climb all the way up. On othersin every tower section there is just one slanted ladder that leads to a resting platform before you continue up the next ladder.

Also, having a toilet in the cab would be kind of gross and messy without plumbing I think. The current system of bottles and buckets is the system of choice at the moment. lol

The largest project I've ever been on encompassed about 5 square city blocks and the longest I've been in a crane in one day was 20 hours. Bu that is a very rare occurence....

By that time of year the cold snaps come and go. It depends on when and if a cold front makes it down from farther north.

And wtf were you doing in Florida that you didn't have the time to come and chill with me?

Yeah that too and you'd be surprised the shenanigans we operators get into with each other while fucking with one another.

And if you knew you wouldn't get caught, would you pick up some heavy stuff and have giant crane battles with the other operators?

It's relatively difficult due to the fact that you actually have to know how to operate the crane efficiently and know how a job site works while all the while making sure you don't kill anybody while making the man lots and lotsa money.

We have little "battles" sometimes but not with anything that could really damage the crane or anybody else for that matter.

Also, hell yeah I would!!

Well my CB radio is a high powered one. I have a highly illegal amplifier that boosts my radio's signal by 5000 watts. Also, my antenna is mounted on the apex of my crane when the law only allows it to be 60' off of the ground. So that allows my signal to reach very VERY far. Add that to "skip" (where my signal bounces off of the atmosphere and comes back down) sometimes allows me to speak with people as far away as Alaska.

As far as the other operators I speak with, we are all in the same union and usually meet each other once a month for meetings. But during the week we gather to hang out, drink, shoot pool and talk shit.

At 6/19/08 07:46 PM, Z-esty wrote: how much do you get paid? and how is the climb up there?

Very well, not as much as should but on most years better than 100k. The climb is long and affords me plenty of time for reflection and sight seeing opportunities.

Well that all depends on the situation Ms. Painter lady.

If something falls after I have picked it up with my crane then it's not my fault. It's the fault of the person who rigged it improperly. But I imagine that if it kept on happening to an operator over and over then he would most likely be fired after 3 times. Unless he actually killed someone or was negligent or failed a post accident drug test then he would be fired after the first offense.

Very little man.
An efficient, bilingual crane operator can pretty much get away with anything man.

Good examples would be screaming terrible racial epitaphs and obscenities at the incompetent people flagging the crane over my PA system. Throwing taco's at the same incompetents of the Mexican persuasion whilst doing the aforementioned atrocities. Slipping my chains into the exhaust pipe of the port-o-potties all the way down into the soup of shit piss and god knows what else and giving the chains to some fucker that's been messing with me. All that and more man....

The obvious exceptions would be tardiness, drug use, showing up for work with a hang over etc.

No unfortunately not. The crane operator that died in the last accident in NY would have been spared if there was something of that nature available.

I think I'd be tempted to abuse a rail pole if there was one, lol. It would be a whole helluva lot faster and definitely more fun than climbing down at the end of the day.

Would you ever consider buying a parachute for the sake of safety?
