The </thread> thing means "end of thread", because in HTML code if something is typed like that it means it's the 'end' of that section of the page. For example, the end of a table would be </table>. The end of the page head is </head>, the end of the page body is </body>, etc.

It's a very old joke that references html code (see the "bold" "italic" "underlined" links above the text field when you're making a post.)

Basically, </ > denotes when the html command is supposed to end or something. So by saying </thread>, it's meant to mean that the thread ends with that command.
