Think of it this way, she's close enough to you to get the pill, in the event that you two would have sex. Most couples don't even get as far so as to even discuss it.

Condoms break. Whether you put them on right or not. They can break.
I've had the incident of them breaking i think twice or three times in 8 months in my current relationship.

And pregnancy is a scary fucking consequence. Especially for a girl.
Some feel too guilty to get an abortion and have a hard time forgiving themselves if they get one, and others can't risk being pregnant even if they are giving it up for adoption. Or are scared to give birth or have certain people find out (parents especially).

It's a really really tough decision to be put in, and you have to make a decision decently fast.
There is nothing wrong with just wanting to avoid it completely.
Birth control and condoms each on their own have a certain percentage of failing. Why not just eliminate all odds and save yourself the trouble?
