Why is smoking 'Cool'?

Now don't get me wrong. If you want to smoke go ahead. I got no problem with that. Your life your choice.
But what I was wondering is this.
Why is it that smoking is considered to be a 'cool' and 'hard' thing to do by teenagers?
It's hardly hardcore to puff on something. And it's not like adults other than your parents actually give a fuck if you do it or not.
So I was wondering why it's cool. Any ideas?

Old movies used to associate the badasses with smoking. It's also something that a lot of people do, even though they start fully aware of it's negative impacts. I also heard it makes you skinny.

Smoking is stupid, and a lot of people think so. In my school, people see the smokers as morons. Of course, those who smoke don't see themselves this way.

I saw 4 Freshmen in the gym locker room smoking a cigarette. They thought they were cool. It was actually pretty funny.

The whole 'cool' thing comes from being a rebel and looking mature. Simple as that. Kids want to look as if they're grown up. I was going to say they think they're responsible but I don't think kids are that dumb.

Most people start smoking during their school years. It becomes an addiction in adult life.

It's the only drug other than alcohol you can get an effect on that is legal and easily accessible. If any other drug was legal we would all be taking that.

Kids could've taken it up because, hell, their parents do. They get addicted. End of story.
Peer pressure is possible--and I don't mean those stupid Ad Council messages that are just a little too obvious, because that's not really what happens.
It's not 'cool' or 'hard' to me, and I consider myself 100% teenager..
It's a habit that either came on fully intentional, or accidental by childhood.

That is somewhat rare. For most people who've smoked even once, it gets them addicted.
For me, I have this intense, psychological resent of smoking that even if I somehow ended up taking a puff, I would never get addicted. It's kind of like when you're little and you tell yourself, I hate tomatoes. Then you end up hating it.
His logic isn't necessarily flawed, it's just reasonable for the majority.

Honestly, if you're smoking, and you don't want to deal with cancer, just kill yourself. By then you've probably had a good 30-40 years.
