I am planning on a huge cartoon project and I have a storyline and began working on it, but then I cam to the problem of color. Initially, I just use whatever colors fit the scene without paying attention to any scheme. Then, I recalled my old art class which covered color schemes and remembered the various schemes (monochromatic, analogous, triadic, split-complimentary, etc). My initial drawings for this cartoon doesn't follow any scheme.

In your opinion, is it better for Flash cartoons to have a color scheme (i.e. Mastermind series with its monochromatic scheme) or feature the entire spectrum of colors (i.e. Homestar Runner)?

Personally the Madness colors (red, white, grey, black) have a really nice effect. The blood and whatnot really stand out in the scenes. If I were you I'd go with a color scheme that emphasizes a specific part of your movie that repeats itself throughout. For example, if a vial of neon green acid is important, I'd make the color scheme something like navy blue-ish (only because red would make things seem Christmas-y).

Having a color scheme would really set the mood in your animation. But depending on the genre, if it is going to be a comedy, I guess a bright hue would favor it, while a more serious movie would take on a darker tone like purple, grey.

Monochromatic can be steered toward a Noir-theme.
