getting into 3D animation 2008-06-01 14:22:05 Reply

What is the difference between 3D Studio Max and Maya? can they both animate or do I need another program to animate them? And what 3d modeling software is most widely used by studios in gaming and 3d animations? And I would also appreciate more suggestions to better software and links to help me out. Thx.

They're both more or less equivalent. See if you can get a trial for either. You shouldn't have problems using the other if you know your way around one.

Free ? i dot think its free i think your refering to Blender

Maya is somewhat a industry standard these days not ranking down on 3d max, just is
well .. most of the places ive heard at least
and you should really go with the one you feel like tbh as many has stated. try the trial versions of Maya or 3d max or maybe try the free open source Blender
anyhoo gl

Thats really what im trying to find out right now, I dont care AT ALL about what I prefer but instead more about the industry standard.

maya PLE is the most restrictive trial i have ever used. they put watermarks on EVERYTHING. they restrict so much... i couldn't see what i was working on.

movies tend more towards Maya, i think...
Zbrush (modeling and texturing only) is crazy... and pretty much universal.
MaxScript helps for (pro) videogames... and personally i love their physics/particle engines. i've grown up on 3ds MAX.

art forum also has a 3d thread, if you have more questions.

Maya - This program is mainly targeting the film industry eg. shrek, transformers

3DS Studio Max - This program is mainly focused in the game industry as it can export levels/models quicker than maya but maya has more animation/modeling features for movies and animation

so it really comes down to what area you are heading into but they are BOTH industry standard.

Well just settle this with this. Choose from what you feel is right ok ? Maya and 3dstudio max is as good in games as in movies both of them are equal its a matter of preferance anyhoo. if your going for games you dont need special effects anyhoo, since when you model for games you do the model.. no special effects at all just the model, the special effectas are programed in the code. and if you want to do animations then there is no differance either, its a question about what interface you like.

to summerize: choose either "3d studio max" or "maya" you cant fail

really, what about MEL scripts?? =P
i'm just jerkin yer chain

anyway, the only real differences between Maya & 3DS are their interface & rendering engine
one more geared towards animation & the other towards gaming...you'll be hard-pressed to find something one can do that the other can't though.

it doesn't matter on which you decide to learn though, Blender is free so give that a go...they're all pretty much the same thing

Animation and Gaming are two completely different things, and the above statement was wrong in so many ways. And how would the be pressed towards gaming? Theres no difference in game modeling than there is in animation modeling. There are many things that Maya and 3ds max do differently. If they were the same, then Autodesk wouldn't be making BOTH Maya and 3ds Max at the same time... They would make ONE product and that would be that :P. And if they were the same, how come Maya is on OS X and 3ds Max isn't? If you ask me, Autodesk is a shit company. Hooray Discreet.

Its free, but the UI is complete shit and will turn anyone away from modeling in a heartbeat.

actually, there is a difference between animation & game modeling...shows how much you know, & i couldn't understand anything else of what you were saying

seems you know very little about business administration also...people tend to stick to brands they have used for a long time
you would probably be surprised if you looked at who owned what companies & when they bought them of the many products you use

Adobe, hint hint? Flash was under macromedia... but that's pretty much ancient history now, right?

woah maya is not free, maya is a 6000 dollar program, but the student version is available for free.. Swift 3D is okay to start learning, but its nothing like Maya, and thats whats used for like disney, and I believe if you take a class at school they use Maya.

Bahaha. Who the fuck are you to tell ME theres a difference? I'm a modeler for a game development studio. You give me ONE way that theres a noticeable difference.

Seems you know very little about anything... You talk about business administration, then go right to peoples opinions. Do you know how much it probably costs them to upkeep both programs? They obviously have varying differences. If you still feel like arguing with me, do it in a PM as this topic has no relevance to the current forum, and you will still have no idea as to what you are talking about, bye!
