I get bored of people telling me, of all people, what music is, and isn't.

Genre elitism is utterly retarded and shows you have no understanding of music.

Music can be anything. No genre is crappy - their chief representatives, on the other hand, often are, and the misappropriations stem from this. There is good in everything, something to be learned from all styles. And why not make a new style if you're tired of what's already out there?

This is why subcultures that follow a specific genre piss me off a little bit - because it turns the music into nothing but a stylistic accessory, rather than another addition to the wide unending variety of sonic landscapes that is Music......

One thing you CAN say about genres is whether or not their focus is most interesting to you. Example - Hip hop. I'm not a big hip-hop fan as a musical genre, because the FOCUS is not on the music, but rather the lyrics. Personally lyrics don't interest me half as much as pure music. But there is much to learn about hip-hop (especially in production techniques!) Despite this, I'm an avid beatboxer and have been beatboxing for many years now with considerable aptitude. One thing about hip-hop that I loved and extrapolated!

Etcetera. I could go on and on as you can see... but I'll save that for a rant on my audio page later haha...

I heard that she used a frying pan in the making of that song.

I listen to a lot of music that isn't club dance stuff and it still kicks ass, and it seems to be more original, most of the time, too. But heavy beats are ok too, it's all music.

The UNCE UNCE sound is the sterotype that has been slapped onto techno and trance. Alot of people come to this site thinking they'll just hear a bunch of thumping techno like sandstorm, but find how much more it can be, and the sheer variety of techno and trance on this site is proof of that. Don't be fooled into thinking UNCE UNCE is all the genre is about

At the end of the day music is sound.
I listen to random frequencies mashed together that has no melodic or "musical" value at all. Then I listen to that UNCE UNCE UNCE, etc. Then I go listen to some amplified, distorted metal strings, being a guitar. With little or no melodic value.

I love music.

No one's mentioned anything atonal or serial yet, though. A huge movement to consider that basically zero "popular" artists have followed. With that in mind:

Have some SCHOENBERG!!

Atonal music really died out a while back. It's a great pursuit of the mind, but listening to it doesn't touch the heart, generally speaking.

I only wonder how much further Schoenberg could have gotten if he had taken atonalism in moderation with the norms of classical. He was a genius, no doubt, and he could have gone so much farther.

Normally, my interest for art music dies after it gets more extreme than minimalism.

The typical kick-on-every-beat rhythm isn't the be-all end-all of music, fool.

Karlheinz Stockhausen only died 5 months ago! haha

Listen to certain pieces of Stravinsky's. Maybe not quite the same thing, but kind of like the mix you describe. Amazing music.

Hells yes, let's have some Schoenberg! Go aton-...oh, wait. How about this Schoenberg. Eh...whoops. I hope the blatant atonality of the latter doesn't make your ears bleed.

Oh yeah, you know, monopolizing the American contemporary classical scene for a couple decades was just a byproduct of his efforts, nothing big.

Schoenberg considered the move to atonal as a mere continuation of music's natural progression and simply devised a means of producing the musical materials with which to work using established techniques. Schoenberg wasn't doing anything that Bach didn't several centuries ago, just with a different vocabulary (also, he also played tennis with Gershwin).

p.s. Stockhausen has nothing on Elliot Carter who's 100 and still trucking. Milton Babbitt is still alive...barely :/

Bingo. If you really want to understand "music" you have to try to see it from as many people's points of view as possible. There is no simple "metal roxors and yall rest of musaks r teh lameness". Same way you don't become a world class producer overnight. It takes time to really grasp the bigger picture of music appreciation.
