A good guitarist can take crap equipment and make it sound good.
However, once I got my ESP, everything was easier and sounded better.
I HAD a Squire wayy back when I was 13, played it to hell.
After that crap I got the EX.
Tapping, Sweeping, Pinching, all of it got really easy.
