The hand-held kind gets about 50-80 meters. Put it under enough pressure in some sturdier containers and you could get some serious distance on it on a tank, probably in excess of 150 meters. Of course, the real use of flamethrowers is for bunkers and clearing heavy brush cover. Pump some napalm into a pillbox and you've got some asphyxiated bad guys and if you have people hiding out in some thick brush, you turn their cover into a weapon. They're not made for lighting people directly on fire, they're support weapons.
