Lame question: Do I absolutely need to see the first one to know what's going on in this one, or will the beauty of it all like you describe make it not matter?
It would help, but here's the basic run down of the first movie:
Four kids stumble into another world through the back of a wardrobe. An evil witch queen has set a permanent winter over narnia. The four kids (2 brothers, 2 sisters) help a bunch of animal friends to defeat the witch and reign over Narnia until late adulthood. Time passes differently in Narnia, so when they come back to the real world they are kids again. Also, there's a gian lion that represents jesus who sacrificed himself to stop the queen (a demonic figure).
There was also a prophecy about the kids. Now you know everything you needed to.
The eldest brother is the "High King." Edmund is the third oldest and was tempted by the witch to betray his siblings in the first movie, but he repented. They each got magical weapons and such as well which they left in Narnia when they went home.
Prince Caspian takes place 1300 years after the first movie, so none of the other characters matter all. The plots don't match up much either, though some of the meaning behind different scenes may be lost on you. It should still be able to be enjoyable.
