Over in Northern England we call it tea but I'd imagine the yanks would confuse that with the hot beverage rather than a full meal.

The correct name for it is tea. I've encountered Southerners who refer to it as "dinner", and they refer to dinner as "lunch". It comes form being conditioned by too many American programmes.
