Hey NG, I've been playing the drums for quite a while and have felt like improving my musical arsonal by branching out to guitar as well as continuing to play drums. I was just wondering, what do you recommend for electric guitars or what do you play?

Considering your new, you can get a cheap fender strat copy set. Comes with amp, stand, lead, tuner, spare strings, plectrum and the obvious guitar.

Ah, I should mention that I play the electric drums so I already have an amp and stand, on top of that, we have an extremely old guitar that's pretty much dead now so that takes care of the pick, and I already know how to tune a guitar by ear (you don't think I'd go in without doing my research would you? :P) so all I'd really need is the guitar itself, spare strings, and lead (wtf do you use lead for?).

Rofl, I meant a cable to plug the guitar into the amp. Since your budget is much wider now that you don't need a set, you should go for a Yamaha, Ibanez or Fender. They're all very good starter guitars. When you get better, go for a Gibson or other types.

I don't think I'd primarally look for a guitar with a whammy bar over one without because as a more begineer, it wouldn't have that much use (you can always bend the strings manually anyways). As for price, I'm not really sure as of yet, but I did get an electric drum set that was $1,100 so.

uhm. Whammy bar bends down. You can only bend notes up with your fingers. ANd down maybe a little bit but hey you're a beginner.

Depends on your style.

The Ibanez RG321 is in my opinion one of the best guitars to start with, because it's cheap in price yet sounds astounding with the mahogany body. As the years pass by you might want new pickups, but you'll always use that guitar.

For a practice amp you can take anywhere, powered by the wall socket or even batteries, get the Roland Microcube. It mimics the sounds of many, many styles of music.

The Floyd Rose whammy bends up and down.

Ah yes, the microcube, my friend has one of those. As for whammy bars, most guitars already come with one anyways so it doesn't really matter (it's quickly become the 'it' thing) and the Ibanez you recommended looks really good, I'll keep it in mind!

i paid 205 for my piece of shit epiphone les paul special [ed] edition.

yes, i mean that as in a special needs person

also, if you don't have a budget then jsut pick some you like by look, pick and amp and play. make sure the strings dont buzz, the tone is what you want, the shaope of the neck, the finish, the pickups are for the genre you'll be palying, etc...

umm, yeah, guitar amps =/= other amps. best get a valve amp. but whatever, pick your on shit based on sound and action.

He may aswell just get an effects pedal to go with his amp.

true, but nothing beats the poonan-milking sound of a nice tube amp :3

I play a Hamer Monaco Elite for my primary guitar - these things are handmade in Connecticut, cost as much as Gibsons, but blow them out of the fucking water.

My secondary (for songs in drop-C tuning) is an ESP EC-500, which is a really solid guitar for the price.

I play through a Marshall DFX-100, which is a really solid combo amp. 100 watts, 12 inch speaker, nice built in distortion and effects.

Of course this is gear I spent 4 years amassing and practicing my ass off with. If you're just starting, go for a Squier Strat-Pack, where you get everything you'll need for under 200 bucks. It's not mind blowing quality, but it's enough to get started. Alternatively, find a cheap amp for under 100 and grab a used guitar from a pawn shop. You can get great deals there.

I've got a Tokai. Anyways, through experience and personal bias. Telecaster. Can handle abuse and has a better tone than a Strat or a Les Paul. Plus no annoying tremelo system.
