There's no reason to get 8 gigs of RAM, and you can't even run more than 4 gigs unless you have a 64-bit OS anyway.

What this guy said.

Windows can't run more than 4 GB. They're gonna release a patch in the future for this.

There is, but if you don't have it you can't run 8 gb.

Windows comes in 64 bit for both XP and Vista. If you're just doing "gaming and general applications", you're not going to need it. If you're doing rendering, video editing, audio production, large-scale image editing and things of that like, more is better.

We're not talking about making a slide show of family vacation photos here. For what you're talking about, 4gb of RAM would still excessive in most, if not all, of your needs.

I do 3d modeling and programming, and I feel I could do ALOT better than my 2 GB right here.

Don't worry about it, 2 gb is honestly the only amount anyone really needs. I run Vista with 2 gb, 3.0 ghz processor and an 8800GT and get great framerates in Crysis on high.
Plus, 64-bit is more trouble than it's worth.

Two gigs is sufficient for both purposes to a great extent. The big snag in 3d modeling is more often in the CPU for calculating light bounces and such. RAM only holds objects on screen and can easily be freed up by using low-poly place holders.
As for the programming, you just need to get better at object oriented programming.

32-bit is still the mainstream OS. You can't find a lot of programs that will work well with 64-bit, it has a lot of driver issues and whatnot.
Within the next 2 years it'll probably become the standard, but as of right now it's best to just stick with 32-bit.

Don't waste your cash on 8gb, it costs more than twice as much as 4gb, and most computers won't be able to handle more than 4gb pressure anyway.

The 3D rendering I'm talking about isn't the same kind as that of an early teenager tinkering around in a 3D program. Like someone else said, you probably have other bottlenecks.

Programming, unless you're loading gigantic data sets or something, isn't going to benefit a whole lot from extra RAM. Although it depends on what you're doing, you typically don't need too great of a machine for this at all.

If having 8gb will give me 120 fps on TF2, I'll get it.

No offense, but I personally think that Cosair's products are not very good.

I'd rather get G.SKILL or Crucial Ballistix RAM

Well, video editing usually takes up a lot of RAM. For gaming, you will be set with 4GB max. Unless you want to play GoW and COD4 at the same time.

Also, 3.7GB is the max for 32bit OS'es. You will need a 64bit OS to get more out of your RAMs.

Also, RageVI, what kind of machine do you have? I hear you talking a lot about your rendering, so I was wondering what you had.

Two 2GB sticks of high speed ram is the best, anymore than that is just excessive and you'll see no gain whatsoever.

I like to pretend in my head that they actually named it Crucial Ballstix.

It just sounds so much funnier that way.
