I'm greatly disturbed by this recent trend in games where, after you lose, they just pop up a menu asking what you want to do next, or restart at the last checkpoint, or just shove you back to the main menu. What the hell? I lost the game, and dammit I want you to know I lost!

Nothing motivated you more than when the dreaded GAME OVER screen came up: it motivated you to push harder, do better in a game, so you could go further, and possibly beat the game. Without a GAME OVER screen, the motivation has started to evaporate. Don't pussyfoot around the fact that my guy is dead, bring up GAME OVER, Mission Failed, whatever!

BRING BACK GAME OVER!

Yeah. There's no message telling you that you've lost... it just gives you a few options for what to do next. Do I restart? Do I go to the menu? Do I quit the game? No, I LOSE.

It reduces the realism because of the fact that it contains the word "Game".

Games haven't abolished "game over" yet, I was playing Lost Odyssey this afternoon and died. Got "GAME OVER" on the screen and I wondered when was the last time I saw those two words.

It doesn't say game over in RE4, its says you are dead like all the resident evil games.

Chess club stats: 20 wins, 22 losses and 4 draws.

If you want to play me PM me or post it in the chess club.

Technically, those menu's don't mean that you're dead. So, maybe we aren't all dead after that menu pops up?

Yes, "Game Over" are two classic words but I personally like a sentence better, something shocking or meaningful like...

Many games I play, even recent ones, still have game over screens.

Yeah, that announcer guy's all like "GAAAAMEE OOOVEEERR!" in a deep voice. Plus the dramatic music I always dread. It does make you feel bad, like you just spent all this time to get to the end, and you failed because you obviously suck at the game.

I'm sure Chains Of Olympus had a "Game Over" screen with some blood effects or something in it.

All the more reason for developers to pull their heads out of their asses and go back to retro goodness that makes videogame cult so awesome. I'm sick of taking everything so seriously, as if I'm watching an interactive movie.

That was mostly back in the day for games you couldn't save in. SO when it said game over, it wasn't really saying "AHAHAHA YOU LOST YA WIMP" it was saying "Lulz, the game is over, you have to start again.

With that being said, if we had game over screens nowadays, it would say "Game Over", then we would wait for a short time before it would take us back to the main/title screen then we would have to load our game... It would be too much of a hassle. Game over screens are still completely welcome in modern arcade games(where they belong) though. And by the way, I mean like arcade games you find on consoles, like something akin to a Contra port, not actualy arcade rooms because noone even goes to them anymore.

Awesome sig made by EvilJesus! :D

What the hell are u guys on about, what about Portal, or Bioshock. One of the reasons those games were so addictive were that you could jack back in straight away and keep playing.

Same with re-spawning, like Quake Arena, UT or COD4, just saying game over is final, it gives you the opportunity to leave the game. While your dead, your not having fun.

Wheras if you have a counter saying "Respawn in 10 seconds" your gonna want to wait those ten seconds, rather than logout

"The usage of "Game Over" varies. Most games of today have dropped the usage of "Game Over" for a successful completion of the game, and instead use other ending texts such as "The End" or an outro and credits sequence. "Game Over" is then only used to signify failure, though some series continue to use the phrase for all endings.

With the advance of computing power, modern Game Over screens tend to be more elaborate than mere flashing text. The phrase may be animated and accompanied by graphics. Furthermore, many modern games don't actually use "Game Over" as the failing ending text. For example, the Resident Evil series uses the ending text "You Are Dead" or "You Died," usually in lettering that resembles bloody slashes or splatters. Mortal Kombat 4 and Mortal Kombat Gold contains a gory Game Over sequence where the beaten fighter falls down a chasm into a spike pit if they run out of credits or choose not to continue. Many other variant texts exist, from "Mission Failed"[2] to "Your adventure has ended."[3]

Occasionally, the screen contains no text at all, but merely a picture, as in Dracula or Duke Nukem: Time to Kill. The phrase can also be spoken by someone off-screen as the scores are shown, such as in the Halo series.

In Need For Speed Most Wanted and Need For Speed Carbon, if the player is busted, and he/she has only one car left and not enough money to pay the fine, no "Get Out Of Jail" passes OR the car has no impound strikes left, the game ends and the player has to start over from scratch.

Most, if not all games in the Half-Life series all have their own "game over" screens each depicting the player character's status being displayed on screen. In the HL1 series, should the player do something that renders progress through the game impossible, the game would display their status as "Evaluation terminated" and the reason as a post-mortem (indicating that the player character has died) (e.g. Subject attempted to create a temporal paradox). Half-Life 2 also utilises the same technique but only if the player renders progress in the game impossible or takes too long in some places. The game would show "Assignment: Terminated" along with the reason for termination while Episode One only states that "Alyx Died" if the player doesn't protect her from taking excessive damage. Episode Two also shows the same except the messages are written from the Vortigaunts point-of-view. However, since the game automatically reloads from the last save point at these points (except for the final scene in HL1 where the player is offered an ultimatum), they aren't technically game over screens."

With a lot of old video games, they pretty much lacked a satisfying ending.
It usally just says "game over"

After that I'm like "why did I play this?"

S.T.A.L.K.E.R. - Shadow of Chernobyl shows the text Game Over when you die. It's a thing which should be there. You can't replace it because what else should it be? On the other side if it says Game Over I am like 'No shit Sherlok'.
