In general, I do not know, however, I'd like to think that the typical Action-Adventure or RPG character stays silent because people take MINUTES to give him a single item and on top of that he usually has to pass a certain trial to get it, or have every detail of its history explained to him.

Example 1.
-"Fuck you Grandma! Give me the fucking shield or I'll take this sword and cut your fucking throat!"
-"Link...Take it."
-"Thank the fucking Lord! Does it take someone ten seconds just to hand you a fucking shield?"
-"Now go and save your sister..."
-"Is this crone listening to anything I'm saying?"

Example 2.
-"A man of few words, I see."
-"Now, I'm not a man of few words. It's that nobody ever fucking listens even when I'm pointing some kind of portable gravity cannon or high-calibre pistol in their face. I feel so empty. I think I'll shoot myself."

So that your view on the character won;t be ruined. If you have a built up idea of the character in your head, but their voice is not to your liking, then the game can be ruined. But if they're the silent protagonist, it's easier.

Imagine playing Ocarina of Time with Link having the same voice as the CD-i one.
