Yupp.

Just letting everybody know that I've started a flash game developement blog for my next game (Et tu, Brute?!). Check it out!

Basically you will be able to follow my struggling with box2D, AI, particles etc. Very exciting, if you're into that kind of thing. I'll also share some arty stuff, although it's actually not me doing them this time.

To get everyone excited here a little pic of the game sketch

Looking good so far. Actually, it's not looking anything because you have only drawn a diagram! lmao

Anyway, good luck and I will check back there from time to time to see your progress. ;)

I actually have a bunch of that stuff coded already, but I can't give everything away at once :D.

Five? I've only seen mongoids but I suppose there are lot's out there. Oh and team Norse's. But they never update theirs so you can't really call that a blog. And then there's the castle crashers devblog. It's the new trend, for sure!

I'd like to see what you come up with, personally.

Agreed.

Zup everybody?

I've actually put up a "playable" demo on my site. Or playable demo is an almost political overstatement, when the only thing you can do is drive back and forth, but anyway. You can try out the physics engine at least.

I hope you've got some fuckin fabulous artwork to go with this engine, cos that'd be one hell of a game.

Naw, I've got a regular site to show my games on, but there isn't really any development stuff there.

That's looking really sweet. I was messing around with a sidescrolling tank not too long ago, but all the fancy box2d stuff blows it out of the water.

It would be awesome if the tanks would fall to pieces when destroyed. Which could be done by replacing the body or holding it together as multiple bodies using a prismatic and distance joint. Or two revolute joints. And then put the bodies in a group. The last would probably work best.
So yes I have some experience with Box2d so ask me if you need an idea. :D

We actually have planned to make things destructable! It will be so awesome when a tank explodes into pieces, and you then drive over the rubble :D. Well that's the plan the question is how many shapes box2D can handle before it bring comps to their knee's.

Actually I stumbled across physaxe the other day, and it seemed like physaxe = box2D*5. Do you have any experience with that? Maybe I should be considering a switch, but it's so daunting, and I already switched from box2D 1.4.3. to 2.0.?....

Of course I know it, haXe wins. But you'll have to port everything to haXe.
It doesn't have joints yet till 1.1.

If you used small circles for the rubble I'm sure it'd go into dozens easily.

Nice work so far :D

I had some problems trying to stop though, whenever i dont press anything and let the tank sit on the flat ground near the crates/rubble, the tank kinda just rolls about somewhat randomly. All WIP though so good luck!

Yeah lock the wheels when it's not moving. Another thing is you might want to decrease the iterations (in Step) to lessen the times the engine attempts to deintersect all the bodies which would make them feel softer. Also would increase the number of stuff you can have in a pile without lag.

Okay no joints sucks... no physaxe for me then (yet). Also I'm not into haXe.

Schmaybe... but it's cooler if stuff breaks into the stuff that formed it. I'll hav..e do to some experiments.

Great suggestions, calls for more experimenting =P.

Yo, just letting everybody know that I posted a new post in my DevBlog. I've tried scaling my game into the recommended range of box2D, and the result where great!

Well go read about it anyway.

Peace

I usually spell illiterate wrong too :D. And native...

Slow progress!

What's going slow is me updating the blog ^^. Also I've been doing important school work at uni (as a matter of fact programming a network multiplayer version of snake in java).

I plan to put up some more stuff this weekend (mapeditor, maybe some more modelling, maybe some AI stuff, maybe some uninteresting stuff about units and health). I've come a bit further really.

Graphics look really nice!

As for the "mouse arm disease", you might look up RSI instead. I've had this sort of thing happen a few times on and off in my life, and every time it's been due to a poor positioning of the keyboard/mouse. Over the past week, for example, my wrists started killing me (after moving to a different room/desk). I raised my chair up as much as it could go (legs barely fit under KB tray), and now the pains has gone away completely--and I've actually been spending *more* time on the computer, recently.

You also might look at moving away from using the mouse when possible. In the vast majority of cases it hinders producivity substantially anyway. Programs, in particular ones geared towards programmers/nerds, will tend to offer many more shortcuts than you realize. Often times you can do *everything* without touching a mouse (or missing the use of it).

I can't remember if you use the Flash IDE or not, but FlashDevelop is good when it comes to that stuff. I'm sure Flex Builder is as well, and if I had to guess, the Flash IDE is probably the worst of the bunch. *shrug*

We should take care not to make the intellect our god; it has, of course, powerful muscles, but no personality.

Oh, mouse arm disease is just the swedish word for RSI (eh, the english translation of the swedish word... you get it), I didn't know what it was called in english. But yeah, the problem is likely down to bad ergonomics. I'm looking into it.

Ya, shortcuts ftw. Also wacom > mouse, from an ergonomic point of view too. The worst thing to use for long is the touch pad on my laptop. It was sitting with that for 8 hours that started this mess.

Problem being I'm usually programming on my mac... guess I'll have to throw in the towel and install eclipse again. I don't know, the Flash IDE is working fine so far. But then again, I've grown used to it =P.

Thanks for the advice anyway, appreciated!

As said on my user pages:

Yey, I've decided to show of some mayor parts of our tank game in a sandbox playable demo.

Nothing more will be happening in a month or so, but this should keep everybody warm for the time being!
