I know my topic title is a little missguiding, but bear with me, it's just a quick question. Of those of you who find school useless, What grades are you getting?

because it's 10:00 and we all know what that means....

Kids do bad in school because they don't try and don't have any prospects. And in the Spring Semester of their senior year in high school, they're going to realize it and be really upset about it all. That's when they'll know they've made a mistake. That's where our plumbers come out of.

Now isn't that lovely?

Lovely!

That's what I figured. However: do they do bad at school because they think its useless or do they think it's useless because they do bad at school? The directionality of your theory is quite important.

Also, if people who think school is useless generally do bad then all you have is a correlation between marks and attitude. Unfortunately, correlations do not imply causation: there might be a third variable that explains the poor marks and attitude.

In sum, you can't actually generate a sound theory from the two bits of information (marks & attitude).

Yeah i make good grades, but i hate school to death. I wouldn't mind it at all if they didn't flood you with homework. I mean, a person needs time AWAY from academics so they can develop as a human being. Why take away all of our free time when and force us to abandon our character development? I hate the system, and believe homework should be banned. Aside from projects of course which actually make sense.

I imagine it's the latter. Although one's attitude towards something can often have an effect on the outcome of said activity, I don't think it would entirely dictate how well one does. I think it's more a frustration that one can't do well at something, so they act negatively towards it. It's the classic 'teenager lashing out' scenario.

Well, homework helps facilitate learning, IMO. Having a solid understanding as opposed to just rlying on rote memory.

You speak as if they make you attend school 24/7. Tons of positive developmental stuff goes on in school: tons of social interactions, etc. School wont impede character development... in fact, it may be a key component.

School isn't useless, but some classes are.

My school requires that I take 2 "Fine Arts" classes and 2 "Practical Arts" classes (and pass them) to graduate. Meaning that I have to take 2 electives relating to around the house (Foods, Int. Design, etc.) or to a career option (Web Design, Photography, etc.) and I have to take 2 classes relating to Arts (music, painting, ceramics, etc.)

I personally think that the 2 Practical Arts as a requirement is useless since they will not help you in any way unless you choose to have a career relating to one of those classes.

School isn't useless. Somethings like the square root of a triangle or the volume of a can are useless.

While I don't believe school is useless I do disagree with how it's run. Mostly you're going to school to get grades, they don't give a shit if you learn or not.

I'd say as an initial impetus kind of question, it almost undoubtedly involves more than just the two factors. However, beyond that I'd say the relationship between the two is not only correlative, but reciprocal - atleast over time.

I disagree, a lot of teachers are quite passionate about getting through to people.

Of course, there are the ones that don't care. But should they really have to? They're not responsible for your life.

Granted, but it mostly helps with meeting new people. Sure i met my GF and most, if not all, my friends at school. But I can only really hang out with them after school. Considering you can't talk in class without being punished and we only have a 1/2 hour lunch break so yeah. I sorta need my after school time to hang out.

True, but they are responsible for your learning. That is their job.

Maybe my school has mostly horrible teachers.

I don't think you really have that much to complain about. You're in school the same amount of time the average person will spend at work a day, assuming you're in a Westernized culture. It could be MUCH worse.

I'd say that the pupil is responsible for their own learning. The teacher is responsible for presenting the material in such a way that the pupils can learn it. Now, if you're saying that the teachers do a bad job at teaching then there's an issue, but if it's just that in the end they don't really care if you got it or not, then that's their prerogative.

Maybe my school has mostly horrible teachers.

It's not an impossibility.

I think ultimately, the claim that 'school is useless' is a false one, whether it be made by angst-absorbed kids, or as a general statement. Kids learn all sorts of things from school (whether they realize it or not), so even if you only learn one thing from your entire tenure at school, you can't say it's useless, because you learnt something.

I agree, I did poorly most of my time in school, because I didn't have friends I could cheat off of, and some of the teachers were unfriendly and unhelpful when I asked for help. Despite that I have gotten to the p[oint where I take college seriouly and enjoy it, most of the teachers are pretty cool once they get past that tough guy -girl mentallity to help weed out the slackers in the first week.

well, right now i have 2 A+'s, 3 A-'s, and 1 B (history b'cuz i hate it most)

and i do think school is useless. its about memory, not learning things. you just gotta remember it for long enough to get a good grade. teachers dont give a [damn, shit, fecies. pick one] about actual learning. and the entire concept is crazy anyway even if we did learn anything. think about it. in a world governed by the laws of physics who goes to a specific place just to learn about specific things at specific times for 1/3 of almost every day? doesn't make sense...

btw, what does 10:00 mean to you exactly?
