I'm making an RPG-esque game where you can choose from a variety of shapes. The only problem is after you do the character selection/stats and go to the actual game, the character you choose isn't the same.

I have it set so, "When selecting square, shape = 4." Then on the actual level (within the player movieclip):

onClipEvent(load){
this.gotoAndStop(shape);
... (and then all the rest of the code.
}

What's wrong with this and what's a superior way for character selection?

You've got it the right way, but you need to change "shape" to "_root.shape"
