This is a place for people to talk about their experiences with Linux (good or bad), Q/A, People interested in trying it out, and its applications.

We follow the BBS rules just as any other thread.

If you have a problem:
Tell us your Distribution and version (eg. "Ubuntu 8.04 64bit", or "Gentoo 2008.0" )
Explain your problem with some detail. If you get an error message, tell us what it says.
And hopefully someone will be able to help out. If not, don't be afraid to Google your question. Community forums such as the Ubuntu forums can help a lot if you fail to get a helping answer here.

Enjoy!

I am currently running Ubuntu 8.04 64 bit and vista 64. I don't use virtual machines because I find it a waste of time.

GNOME with Kiba Dock (OS X dock look-a-like)

Its a fairly simple setup. I suppose it is somewhat like a mix between windows and mac in layout.
I do have Flash 8 installed though wine, but it was a bit difficult to figure out.

I'm not an avid Linux users but I've been bouncing around *NIX systems for over a year now. I started off with Mandrake and later PC-BSD and then Ubuntu 6.06.

At the moment I'm using Kubuntu 7.04 but I'm regretting my decision just 'cause its KDE and super glitchy. I really liked the stability of 6.06.

That Kiba dock is pretty sexy too, does it come as a port?

Also, Wine eats the dicks.

Im not too sure what you mean by a port, but if you mean its made for windows, then no. Kiba Dock is made for linux and can be used as a dominate window/menu toolbar. I did have to compile it to get it working on 64 bit but that was easy enough. It also allows you to insert GNOME and KDE panel items.

Oh, nvm. I guess Linux doesn't call them ports. Basically the apt-get install function.

Yea of course they do. Im not too sure on how much you know of linux, but you can check out the wiki on the kiba site

To check out kiba-dock from the Sourceforge server run:
svn co https://kibadock.svn.sourceforge.net/svn root/kibadock/trunk kiba
You will find all kiba related Software in the kiba Directory.

Currently Sabayon Linux 3.5 Loop2 Beta on the desktop, 3.4f on the laptop
Laptop dual boots Slackware 12, desktop dual boots Windows XP (I still use it for... uhh.... something? I think?)

I started on Gentoo in August 2006 and used it for a year before moving to Sabayon.

I've also dabbled with SuSe and Arch, under emulation only though.

At this point the only reason I have windows installed is because i have a zune. I don't dislike windows, but I do find it a burden sometimes. It also would be great if Adobe had more support for it, but I dislike the CS3 line so I am fine with running 8.

Hey everyone,

I curiously came across this thread through serendipity, and was wondering if anyone else was around that was interested in Linux. I'd like to see if anyone else has stories/stuff to share with their Linux experiences out there on NG. To try to start something off, I could quickly yak about my Linux background...

I'm an avid Linux user myself, both professionally and on a personal basis. I became interested in it in around 1999, and was using it on a daily basis since around 2001 or so. I've had the ability to play with many distros, including Debian versions 3.0-5.0, Ubuntu 7.04 and 7.10, SLES 9 and 10, SLED 10, openSUSE 10, KNOPPIX, PCLinuxOS 2007 and MiniMe 2008, Damn Small Linux, Puppy Linux, Slackware 10 and 11, Mandrake/Mandriva, RHEL V4 and V5, and CentOS 5.3. I also have work experiences with HP-UX and Sun Solaris, so I know the UNIX side of life, too.

My personal setup includes my favorite distro, Debian Testing (currently "Lenny") on a quad-core server hosting VMware, and three Debian guests for different server purposes. I also have a space open for CentOS for RHEL testing and a space reserved for the upcoming openSUSE 11.0.

Well, enough about me...anyone else out there using Linux? If so, what's your favorite distro?

Using the Hardy Heron, huh? I personally dislike Ubuntu, as there's nothing that Ubuntu has that Debian Testing hasn't. It's also more bloated than Debian and generally makes it less stable in my experiences. However, it's a great distro to acclimate people to Linux, especially those who want to play with compizfusion and GNOME.

I don't think wackyanimation is around (he last posted 2 mos. ago), but I don't see why you can't join...

Not a bad recreation. You pretty much got all the goodies there. I personally don't screw around much with GNOME, as I prefer KDE. I had KDE 3.5 pretty slicked up with a nice dark theme. I'd pop over some screenshots, but I recently upgraded my Linux server and didn't bother to reconfigure KDE yet. I was actually waiting until KDE4 graced Debian Testing's repos...

Actually, PlayOnLinux runs Windows apps through Wine. It's just a graphical frontend to the application that helps manage the Wine configurations for each Windows app you run. It is a great app tho...

How much support does this club have? I'm a Linux user, but I'm not sure if it's worth joining, because I'd be willing to bet that <1% of NG uses (or even knows about) Linux.

The linux users of NG are a SMALL demographic.
Which is why a Linux club would never take off here.

Stick to your respective distro forums, people. :)

I love my Ubuntu 8.04. The only problems I have with it involve Counter-Strike and Half-Life 2. If anyone wants to help get HL2 emulating correctly, I'd appreciate it!

Yeah. I have Gnome on my PC in my room, and it's the only PC that doesn't have a Flash-type program or Flash itself. Is there a universal Flash Kit for Linux, or is there, like, one for Ubuntu, one for Gnome, one for KDE, etc.?

Stop posting that unrelated picture. You have to use CS3 and WINE. I'm too lazy to explain how.

CS2 and flash 8 currently work in wine without any extra programs. CS3 is possible using other programs. CS4's installer does not work at all, so it will take a while for a fix for that suit. If you can go without AS3 though, flash 8 has everything you need. as for photoshop... personally I just use gimp, even when on windows.

I have ubuntu 8.04 32bit on disk, haven't installed it yet. I know my bootloader can boot from usb hard drive, but I'm not too sure about partitions on an external HDD. I do not want to erase any data. My main reason for running linux is I want to play my cousins game - he made specificaly for linux. Maybe you could tell me what it's like :3 - http://zoids-quest.sourceforge.net/downl oad.html
