Just wondering in case I ever want to make my own soundtrack for my movies, which music making software do you prefer? I'm talking original music, as in I actually have to write a new song on the computer, not ripping songs.

I don't even know if they exist. If they do, how much do they cost?

There are a number available, assuming you're talking about loop mixing software. www.sonicfoundry.com's ACID series is an ever-popular program for music making. It gives you royalty-free loops for you to use in the tracks you create with it. Extremely user-friendly and surprisingly addictive. However, it's rather expensive ($100s) for what you get. I'd suggest the trial version.

There's also Cakewalk, which I've yet to work with, but have heard many good things about.

Good luck.

Pshhh! $100 isn't much. I can afford it, but then I'd only get one of them. Thx.

Well in my arsenal I have

Cool Edit Pro v2 ( I use this to edit samples I use or make my own usually with a mic and cooledits awesome tools to make it sound professional)

Fruity Loops ( A really good sequencer that puts everything all together for you into the final song. Or sometimes I use it just to make loops to use in Acid Pro *see below*)

Acid Pro 4 (Also used to make the final track by putting various loops together and "one shot" samples)

www.samplenet.co.uk (Where I download many "free" samples)

Mod Plug (free sampler, like fruity loops but a bit more basic. IT outputs mods and midis. Mods are like Midi's but in Mods you can use your own samples and winamp can play them. many free mods that you can get samples from *your really not supposed to rip samples.. but you can* are at http://www.modarchive.com/

Many others but too much to mention. those are the main ones though.

fruity loops is meant to be pretty good. I think that is around the same cost as flash would be. don't quote me on that.

back in the day, impulse tracker used to be pretty good. I say back in the day cos it was a dos based program. if you can find it and run it, that was pretty good. well, good-ish. I'm sure there are newer programs that are much better than that.

I think fast tracker kept going, so that might have a windows version? yeah, I used to have a hard drive full of songs I made in those programs, none of them that great. I can't play any of them properly now though cos they fuck up (only a bit) in winamp and impulse tracker doesn't work with my sound card - that's if I even remember to get them off my old computer before it died.

oh well, the best thing about impulse tracker was that it was free.

this used to be the ultimate resource for all that: http://www.maz-sound.com/
I don't know how up to date it is, I haven't been there in like forever.

....No.

And you guys by putting loops together into a final song you mean basically I just piece things together? What about making songs from the very beginning, like you would to a nokia ringtone, as in COMPLETELY original work? Can acid cakewalk and the rest of them do that?

If your talking about programs that allow you to compose your own melody and harmony, then I would use Sibelius as it is a great composer's program.

Definitely Fruityloops. No doubt about it. Only, it's called Fruity Studio now.

So, definitely, if you're going to buy something, get fruityloops. It's what I use. And I rock... sometimes.

And, even though it's easy to find on KaZaA, don't download it - they need money to keep making the product. ;)
