I still prefer Part Troll if I'm honest. By the end of Tinselworm he started getting a little too carried away with the music rather than the comedy, as if he were a rock star as opposed to a comedian... :S

To be honest I think Tinselworm is very poor. Theres a couple of things that make me laugh, but theres so, so much that doesn't. It was like he was trying too hard or just generally not being very funny. All of Part Troll was hilarious (and all of Cosmic Jam and most of Bewilderment too), even when he played music it was very funny.

And I really want to like Tinselworm and after being disappointed when I saw the show in Glasgow I was hoping the DVD would turn out better.
I think its due to the big arena thing, I think certain comedians can pull it off and others are just best in smaller venues. It felt so impersonal to watch Bill in Glasgow and Wembly must have been even worse. And when I saw Stewart Lee in a tiny little theater in Hudd I was in agony from laughing (granted I prefer Lee and he's hardly well known, but the vibe was so much better for comedy).

Bill doesn't have the kind of personality for huge arenas, he's more surreal and quietly intelligent and I don't think that works in places like that. People like Lee Evans and Peter Kay do it well but they're loud and exciting and its joke, joke, joke.

Just my thoughts :).

Hey, did anybody see Dane Cook's Rough Around the Edges? It was hilarious. Especially the part about pedophiles. I can't wait to see his next special.

I think you're right to be honest.

I was hoping for much more from him really... it was probably just performing for such a large audience (I believe that's the largest audience he's currently performed in front of) that got to him slightly. Maybe he thought he needed to alter his material to cater for more varied tastes? Even though that would be a false assumption considering those who would go to see him perform KNOW what he does and that's what they like him for.

Anyway, rambling. Bottom line, Tinselworm was indeed disappointing, but I've honestly seen much worse comedians out there, so this hasn't put me off the troll-man for good.

Not seen much Leary. I'd like to though. Though he's clearly heavily influenced by Bill Hicks. Apparently Sean Hughes said to Bill Hicks that it was great that he had quit smoking and what made him quit, to which Bill replied 'To see if Denis would.'

Carlos Mencia
Not heard, but from an article I read on cracked I got the impression he's just a mediocre comedy who shouts things.

Mitch Hedberg
Like him too, need to see more of his stuff.

Dave Chapelle
Watch a Chapelle show the other day and wasn't overly impressed. I think it was an early one though and I saw another on YouTube so I'll watch that sometime too and then see.

All the others I've never heard of.

Welcome :).

Contrary to popular belief, Carlos Mencia is quite funny indeed. Try watching his 1 hour special "No Strings Attached" or a few episodes of his show "Mind of Mencia" or you could watch his first Comedy Central 30 minute special. "Comedy Central Presents: Carlos Mencia" of course this was back in 2002 or 2004. Either way it was a while ago. :\

You're being a little easy on him. He's just a dumb fat jerkoff who steals jokes and assumes people don't get a joke if he doesn't get a big laugh, after which he proceeds to explain the joke until he gets sympathy laughter They weren't laughing because it wasn't funny, dickhead. Either that, or he'll think it's because he's sooo edgy and controversial and offensive, which he isn't. He's just an annoying joke stealing cunt. People like him shouldn't be called comedians. I hope he gets ass raped to death by a wild horse.

Bill is great but Tinselworm is poor.

I watched Pablo Francisco too who I thought was funny a few years ago but now just seems like juinile shit.
He seems to try and make one joke last a few minutes too but doesn't manage as well as a people like Stewart Lee and Ross Noble.

From what I've seen, no, he's not.
Being a Brit however I get to avoid him and he's unknown here.

In fact so many fantastic American comedians are unknown here. Carlin never got any recognition and David Cross doesn't either.
Hicks did though. So we're alright there :).

This is a bump I intended to make a week or so ago.

I went to a festival here in the England called Latitude. Its very art and had loads of music, plays, short films, mini art exhibitions, etc and some stand up comedy. I spent a lot of time in the comedy tent as some of the people there were the biggest draws for me.

I saaaaaw:

Marcus Brigstocke:
Four times, twice as part of an morning ensemble reading/mocking the days new. Twice doing his solo show, in two different tents, one much shorter and more about a documentary he was hosting. He was very good and a mild fondness grew into a liking of him :).

Shappi Khorsandi:
It was just her routine I'd seen a week early on Michael McIntyre's Comedy Roadshow, which despite liking then wasn't really interesting without any new input. So meh.

Lee Mack:
He was alright, I kind of like him and his set didn't change that opinion at all. Wasn't great, wasn't bad.

Dave Fulton:
I can't remember if I saw him or not. I think I did... meh.

Robin Ince:
I genuinely like Robin, he's a very likable person and I've only seen some fairly iffy performances on Ricky Gervais' DVD extras. He was fantastic here though, his set was so much more mature than the others I've seen of him. Very enjoyable :).

Mark Thomas:
I was going to see Mark Thomas in Huddersfield but he sold out very quickly and the only tickets the theatre had were at opposite ends of the theatre - so not ideal for me and my friend. So Mark was a huge draw for me and I fucking loved him! He was outstanding, I urge everyone to look into his stuff (though as its political its probably more Brit friendly). I could go on for a while but I shan't :).

Russell Kane:
Wasn't strictly stand-up (though he was on, I didn't see the solo set) but he did a play of a modern tale (banking crisis) in Shakespearean verse with another lass. It was great and I do wish I'd watched his solo show as he only did like 5 minutes during the intro to this play. Good stuff though :).

Sean Hughes:
I was expecting better from him, he wasn't bad by any means and he was definately funny, but performances from when he was younger were much better.

Miles Jupp:
I must have seen him as I saw Sean and Janeane after him, but I can't remember him at all. S'what a weekings drinking does to you :P.

Janeane Garofalo:
Oh. Deary. Me. She was fucking awful. Awful! You Yanks should be ashamed for giving the world her poor excuse for comedy. She died soooooo bad its untrue. Nothing she said got even a chuckle, and then lost all dignity with a terrible 'So.. is Michael Jackson okay, I've heard things... is he alright?'. Terrible. And cause it was such a middle-class festival no one would heckle her. I wanted to shout something just so she could blame it on a tough crowd. Instead she broke down and admitted she was shit and walked off early. It was embarrassing and very awkward. And hilarious at her expense :D.

Ed Byrne:
As Janeane bombed and left early Ed got an extended set as he was on straight after. I do like Ed Byrne but he's giving me less and less reason to do so. His material was 90% old stuff from years ago. So I wasn't overly impressed. I found it funny, but I wanted much more. Apparently he did do new material on his recent tour though (which I missed), so at least I have something to look forward to when did new show goes on Youtube :P.

John Gordillo:
Not heard of him previously and was just there to get a decent spot for Dave Gorman really, but I ended up really liking him. Was very bitter and cynical and thats what I like :D. A nice find for me :). Check him out.

Dave Gorman:
I love Dave Gorman, he's such a nice person, like Robin Ince but waaaaaaaaay more loveable. The material was kind of familiar as I've read all his books, but I loved it nonetheless. I reccommend everyone to check out his Googlewhack Adventure which I watched last night, its brilliant and elevated him into my top three comedians of all time - behind Stewart Lee and Ross Noble.

Sean Lock:
He was on straight after Thom Yorke's special midday set and since the comedy tent was next to the main stage the area was packed. So I didn't really get a good spot and had to watch the screens in a cramped crowd. I can't really remember much of the set due to the conditions. This is shit for me cause I love Sean, he's easily one of my favourite comedians and was actually the person I wanted to see most, but Thom Yorke was unmissable and I'll get to see Sean again, hopefully. So, I'll live :).

Kerry Godliman:
She was actually quite good, I find it hard to like her though because of some of the characters shes played on TV, she is always cast in unlikeable roles. But she was surprising good live.

Jamie Kilstein:
Now any American's in here may know more about this guy than me, because I've never heard of him - and he's American. I really liked this guy though, was one of the top discoveries of the weekend. If you don't know him check him out, he's well worth it.

Brendon Burns:
This guy is a bit of a twatty shock-comedy guy and normally I don't think I'd give two shits, but I was being happy and stuff and I laughed quite a lot and he was good and was funny. I just prefer subtly really. Can't knock him though, he entertained me a lot.

Rufus Hound:
He's been on TV here a few times and I've never not-liked him. His show was good, nothing fantastic and not mega laugh-heavy, but it was decent.

Glenn Wool:
Like Rufus I'm vaguely aware of this guy cause of Buzzcocks or something, cept I wasn't as fond of him as I was Rufus. However, his show was fine, funny and whatnot.

Jon Richardson;
Had seen him like a week before on Michael McIntyre's Comedy Roadshow and I thought he was good on that. Thankfully he did different material here but it just wasn't as good. He was cynical and bitter, but not in a way that was funny. It sounded more like than man whining. Though in fairness to him I was in agony by this point due to sitting on hard ground with no back support for about 3 hours.

Highlights:
Marcus Brigstocke
Robin Ince
Mark Thomas
Russell Kane
John Gordillo
Dave Gorman
Jamie Kilstein

They're all pretty much very positive but I was in a very positive mood throughout the whole weekend and just wanted to enjoy everything really. So I did :D.

Jim's Contraband is on youtube.
I'd like to get more Billy Connolly too, I have two videos but they're both 'Best Ofs' and specials. Not pure shows.
And based on those two I don't really think he's that amazing. Sure he pioneered Stand Up and that deserves respect, but I just don't really care. Kind like I feel about Maiden.

I've been digging Doug Stanhope recently too. I'd like for him to come over here, I'd like to see him live, theres too few full shows on Youtube.

Oh my god, I wish I could have been there so bad. Haha. I've hated her ever since I saw Mystery Men back in the 90's! I've noticed that female stand-ups usually just aren't that funny. The only ones I've seen on TV that I thought did well were Wanda Sykes and Sarah Silverman. And I don't think it's just because I'm a guy and can't relate either, they just either go for shock laughs by talking about their periods, or lame assed excuses for jokes. (The Michael Jackson thing is a good example.) Garofalo isn't the worst examples of it though. Lisa Lampanelli and Chelsea Handler absolutely SUCK. Blegh. That sounds like it was a great show though Nev.

I have nothing to whore out at this time, therefore, this part of my sig shall be hollow and empty like Davidzx's life.

Female stand ups are fairly shit in general.
Or at least it seems that way. There isn't many female stand ups that make it big and some are decent. Never spectacular though.
But I imagine despite the abundance of good male stand ups that there are plenty that are god awful.

I've never heard of Wanda Sykes but Sarah's made it over here to an extend and she seems alright. And I totally would ;).
Jo Brand, Josie Long and Holly Walsh are all pretty good from over here. Victoria Wood too, but she's kind of like the Billy Connolly of female comics.

That sounds like it was a great show though Nev.

Oh it was. Absolutely fantastic festival. Thom Yorke solo set, Bat for Lashes and Nick Cave :D.

Well I suppose in America you had Lenny Bruce and stuff revolutionising things.
Over here in the UK though most stand ups were a bunch of Northern fat, working class racists telling jokes about "them pakis/darkies".
Billy changed that.

Hey guys, I'd love to join. I'm 16 and I really aspire to be a comedian. Some of my favorites are George Carlin, Richard Pryor, Frank Caliendo, and Louis C.K.

Please give some love to The Great One. He's Awesome.

I am neither a Wii, PS3, or 360 fanboy. I personally support Mattel and their Intellivision.

I'm actually a stand up comedian myself. At only 18 I'm only starting out but I've already one some competitions and performed at the Edinburgh festival last month, the world's biggest comedy festival. It was only a small venue but they seemed to dig my set and I'm going back next year for a bigger show. Look out for Hamish Steele in the listings. I still haven't got my set fully done yet (obviously... got a whole year) but it's probably gonna be called "Attention Seeker".

But apart from performing at the fringe, I went to see some great stand ups. Dylan Moran, Rhys Darby, Mark Watson, Steward Lee, Richard Herring, a great gory magic double act Barry & Stuart, Paul Foot. My favourites though were the little knowns. We saw an amazing sketch comedy group called WitTank which had us screaming "Rim Me Hardy!" endlessly throughout the week. But our all time favourite comedian was Tim Key. He's hard to explain, just look him up on You Tube. But we were pleased to find out he won the prestigious Perrier Award. Which is always nice to know that something you liked and few people saw got recognised.

!

Someone else who has actually performed! I did a bit of stand-up when I was 16 and 17, but didn't really continue in university as I got wrapped up in writing for a comedy paper instead.

What was the weirdest show you've ever done? Mine was some event at my high school, and it was primarily a music event (i.e. zero people who went there to see comedy). I get there and ask them what the schedule is supposed to be, and the conversation basically went like this:

<Organizer> Oh yeah, okay, we put you down for a thirty minute slot. And you're on first.
<Me> What.

I knew there was no way I could go on for a cold crowd that was expecting only bands, so after some quick negotiating, I convinced him to put someone else on for a song first and break my set into two fifteen minute blocks, and ran off to hammer out two set lists, which due to the HUGE time slot consisted of almost all new material.

A few jokes flopped, but for the most part things went surprisingly well, all things considered.

P.S. For other peeps: If you have trouble with public speaking, do stand up once or twice. It's so much more high pressure that after you do it, you'll be completely comfortable giving a regular presentation to a room full of people.

BEHAVIOUR NOTES: BIRD SEEMS AGITATED, LIKELY AS A RESULT OF LIVING IN A BOG.
If you're havin' girl problems, I feel bad for you son. I got 99 problems, with bitches < 1%

I'll keep an eye out for you.

Jealous!
Though I'm seeing Stew myself in November. But I've missed out on seeing Richard so many times now :(.
Wasn't his show something to do with taking the Hitler tache back?

I'm not sure how good I'd find Tim Key on a stage just because of how slow his stuff seems to be, and because I'm only used to seeing his little bits on Screenwipe there would be a whole lack of the weird visual thing he does too.
