It's like the Eggman vs Robotnik arguement: both names apply to the same character and are just as correct as the other.

So please, kindly shut your traps.

But both monikers still refer to the main character, thus the arguement that one is better than the other is pretty meaningless. You may call him Robotnik if you like, and I'll still think Eggman. Same thing when I say Eggman and you think Robotnik, and the exact same thing with Aeris/th.

It's Aeris, "Aerith" sounds like someone trying to say Aeris with a lisp.

Spare me.

It's Aerith. The name Aries was a product of lost in translation. But by the time anyone figured it out, everyone already knew here as Aries so the name stayed. Some people stick with it, but others choose to call her by her real name.

and they're both lovely!

Also for those of you asking "who cares", uhh...ITS A FUCKING VIDEO GAME FORUM! That's why we're here! Because we DO care. Geez, the retards these days...

Lovely!

It seems like most people are just doing it so they can seem more faithful to the translation. And by that I mean, they want to be Japanese.

Same name, different monikers, doesn't really matter.
Robotnik is Eggman, Eggman is Robotnik.
M. Bison (the boxer) is Balrog (again, the boxer).
Porky is Pokey.

It's both. Call it what you want, but don't rag on others because they call it something else.

In the US version of FF7, the name was Aerith! But in the Japanese version, it was Aeris!

Now let this be a lesson! Damn it!

Aeris, because even though I've never played any Final Fantasy games, I've spent the most of my life hearing Aeris, not Aerith.

Aeris.

And, Robotnik.

I don't mind when people make that mistake, but I get pissed when they try to correct me as if I'm the one who's wrong.

Anyways, the way I see it is: your two naming situations are different. For both those names, either one is fine, but the reasons for using different ones are different. If you say "Robotnik" instead of "Eggman," you have a love of nostalgia. If you say "Aerith" instead of "Aeris," you're an elitist Japanophile...and probably a traitor to this country :P

Also, from what I understand: M. Bison, Balrog, and Vega are THREE TOTALLY DIFFERENT CHARACTERS!!!

It's not the same as Eggman/Robotnik or Rockman/Mega Man.
It was a mistake in translation so Aeris is actually a mistake and incorrect.
If you like to be wrong and retarded then cool go with Aeris.
I however like to be correct and better than you all, so Aerith is the proper way to go.

But that was the name used in the entire English game, so English-speaking audiences have adopted "Aeris" as the name to call the character. You can call her whatever you want, but if you say that the other name is "wrong," you're just a Japanophile snob, and certainly not better than anybody. That's like getting pissed at someone for spelling "theatre" "theater." It's pointless snobbery for the sake of snobbery.

Aerith and Aeris are actually the same. "Aeris" is simply "Aerith" romanized. Personally I stick with "Aeris" because it doesn't sound like you have a lisp, but the majority game content and other sources use "Aerith" a lot. It really doesnt matter, but it is really annoying.
