Audio Portal needs a new genre

Progressive (for both metal and rock). It would make sense, especially for people searching for that kind of music or wanting to make it and make their music easier to find.

Adding more genres is making music harder to find, especially when adding genres that nobody but the author knows what they actually mean.

If people are looking for music with distorted guitars in, they will look for 'rock'. Not 'Progressive'. Not 'Black'. Not 'Neu Metal'. Not 'Scandinavian fire rock'. They will look for rock.

Yeah metal is essentially just either metal, heavy metal or thrash metal in my eyes or even just... METAL as a whole. It all sounds terrible at the end of the day so who cares what its called lol.

Melodic and Progressive metal, ROCKS! Pun intended. There's just so much energy, so much power that stems from the genre that no other can touch. I agree that making too many sub genres of a genre is just pointless, but hey, people do anything to make something "unique".

I imagine that anything of Progressive Rock would be classified in the AP as most-likely "indie". I've honestly never heard of progressive metal, but metal, like techno, has hundreds of subgenres.

Just put Disco under Dance, Hardcore under Heavy Metal, and all others under Misc. We don't need more genres.

By hardcore, you could mean hardcore metal, happy hardcore, uk hardcore etc. There are many hardcores.

i highly disagree with that statement. I personally like metal, HOWEVER... i dislike most death metal with distored voices and cliche double bass drum. though i am like most thrash and classic metal... if you listen to Black Sabbath, Metallica, Megadeth... they're all labelled Metal... but so are Job For A Cowboy or In Flames... so i'm glad there sub-sections because then if there was a radio station that had all metal i'd be clueless on what i'd hear...

I think there are enough Genres already. If you really feel like your music doesn't fit where you are putting it just write the genre in brackets after the title. Thats what I do. If i've submitted some breaks i'll chuck it in the drum and bass section as 'Title (Breaks)'.

Also the comments section is a good place to self categorise your music.

The thing is, there are too many sub-genres but too little top level genres.

Emo is actually barely a genre anymore. Once "emotional hardcore", which was generally looked down upon by emo bands, it was a subgenre of Hardcore, Post-Punk, and Post-Hardcore.

Now its used as an umbrella term for all pop and alt-rock bands.

Mmmm we need more electronic genres before more rock genres, considering the ratio of rock to electronic submitted... Just a thought... I still think we lack some VERY important ones (main case in point: hardcore), but otherwise its pretty... decent... as it is, except for all the noobies who have no idea that drum and bass is something totally different from its name.

I have a better idea. Can we please rename the genre "heavy metal" to just "Metal" ?? Seems it would make a lot more sense, as "Heavy metal" is a specific kind of metal and lends people certain expectations when they check out that genre.

"Metal" would encompass all types of metal. I don't know why the only metal genre on NG was named Heavy Metal anyway, seems a really stupid choice if you ask me, when you can just call it "Metal" and please everyone.

If you wanna go deep, there is more than a few. Sludge, Pirate, Deathcore, Metalcore, Gorecore, Goregrind, Noisegrind, Demonic, Tech, Math.
Then there is sub-subgenres. Melodic death (melodeath), technical death (techdeath), the list goes on.
I agree, it's very helpful when you're talking about bands in conversation, but in the end, it's energetic and heavy, I like it.
