Heh, this reminds me of a time when I was in Junior School (I guess that's what it's called in America? Age 9-11 anyway), and one of my friends shouted out the word 'shit', just for the sake of it, being a general kid. A teacher heard him and he got an instant detention. Classic.
Another time, in the same year of school, a different guy was acting the same way - being a kid who reveled in the opportunity to say random swear words in the classroom when no adults where about - chanting the word 'lesbian!' (which, let's be fair, isn't really a swear word at all). The teacher came back into the classroom and demanded to know who was chanting, and the poor guy raised his hand, looking sheepish, and was rewarded with a detention for his honesty. Sometimes I think that the only thing school teaches you is that telling the truth is a bad thing. :P

My middle school banned coughing during assembly. It's harder to hold in a cough than it is to hold in a swear word (unless you've got tourette's).

Not exactly.... In my school, most of the teachers swear all the time on the premise that we've heard them all before and we're not going to be *that* offended.
During an assembly, our Head-of-Year was talking to the whole yeargroup when his phone went off so he said "aw for fuck's sake" quite loudly and switched it off... That made me giggle (:
