I've got plenty of space and a decent processor + 2GB RAM. The main problem is just connection speed.

I've got a average of 1.8 mbps upload speed (from checking on upload tests around the net).
I was wondering how far I could go with that. Probably going to be doing a bit of multimedia streaming over the site too.

Your ISP needs to know that you're planning on hosting a server or else they may shut you off or knock you down to 56k speeds (it's happened before). So find out if your ISP will allow you to do it and they may charge you extra for it. It's just better to buy webhosting from a company because it's cheaper.

Then you're gonna need to tell them that you're planning on hosting your own server so that your connection speeds don't get cut down for using too much. But as I also said, it's cheaper & safer to buy hosting from a hosting company than upgrading your hosting account.

As Jessii said before, buying from a company is best. They handle all the dirty work, and do all the maintenance. It's also cheaper. If going with a hosting company, go with Dreamhost. They have good prices and a ton of bandwidth for the price.

That speed won't cut it when you start streaming media.
