German. I understand a lot of it, but I have a hard time remembering what the words are. Like, if I see a sentence written in English, and then the same sentence in German, I understand how the words are organised and conjugated, and all that bollocks. But for the more complicated phrases I'd have to really think to get it perfect.

it can happen if you've been exposed to the language for quite some time, and only understand based on relations to English and/or the way the words sound and how you use them.
it's all based on comprehension. you have to have some clue. once you know, it's easier to pick up the language.
it's the same for me, just a different language.
