The word "faggot"

Originally, the word was used to describe a bundle of twigs, sticks, or branches bound together. As Christianity took Europe by storm, these bundles were used as fuel to burn heretics, not excluding homosexuals. Over the centuries, it had evolved to become an offensive name to call homosexual men, and is still used that way today.

However, within the increasingly popular and influential culture of the internet, the word faggot has taken on a new meaning, used to describe a particularly stupid person, not taking into account his or her sexual orientation. Unfortunately, by slinging this word around, we offend homosexuals to a similar degree as we offend black people with the use of the N-word. Indeed, much of internet culture is steeped in shock value, but unlike those who sling around the N-word, most people who use the word faggot (to my knowledge) don't intend to insult any particular culture or lifestyle, much as when they throw around the word retard.

Truthfully, if we all avoided words holding any derogatory meaning whatsoever, there would be no problem, but that's just not going to happen. That's why I believe that the next best thing is to redefine the word "faggot" as pertaining to any individual (straight, gay, bisexual, etc.) that defies human evolutionary progress by exhibiting extreme ineptitude in physical, mental, or social categories. If we allow the internet to influence real-world culture to a great enough extent, the word can be cleansed of its "offensive to homosexuals" connotations.

Granted, the word "faggot" would still be considered an insult. It is, after all, mean to tell people that they should be burned for extreme laziness, stupidity, or repulsive behavior. Nevertheless, the new definition would be more politically correct than its current one, and that's a step in the right direction.

I think that could work if you had a big enough audience for it. An internet website is not the best place to get mature comments and opinions from on this subject - definitely not Newgrounds. I believe - even if it all worked out well and the word's definition was changed - you would still have the ignorant people who will sink as low as to use the word 'faggot' to offend people for having a different sexuality or whatever which sadly, is alot of people. Well, you can never always have it your way so I guess the best thing to do is to ignore it and wait until the phase of people saying 'faggot' passes. It seems like it may be ages but it could happen. It's just like a word or a phrase people enjoy repeating over and over again. Tonnes of them were said in the 70's and 80's and are no longer said.

Anyway, I agree with you. Maybe it's just me, but I don't recall many people, none at all for that matter, going around calling homosexual people "faggots". It's either "fag", "flamer"(Gaining a lot of popularity, that one is.), "gay", or "ass pirate". There are many other words I could add on here, but I'm just mentioning the popular ones.
