I'm not familiar with corel painter, but look for File > Save as and there may be a drop down list for exporting, if not look in other dialogs for Export.

better to used jpeg. Gifs are only good for animation and maybe a very small image size, if you need it.

Thanks for replying, but NG only allows me to upload GIFs as my icon.

do you mean the small icon that appears on your userpage posts? That's the only one that requires GIFs, I think.

I have already. It looks terrible when I do it with Flash, and worse when I do it with Paint. The question was whether I could to it without making the new image looked like I poured acid over the original.

Hey, i read instructions on how to open DDS files on Paint shop pro (I cant get photoshop but i heard that its like a downgraded version of it) i did everything it said to and i still cant open and DDS file. Any tips or other istructions to offer?

The instructions i downloaded:

"Instructions for Using the DDS Photoshop Plug-in with Paint
Shop Pro
1. Make a directory in your Paint Shop Pro directory called Plug-ins.
For example:
C:\Program Files\Jasc Software Inc\Paint Shop Pro 7\Plug-ins
The directory above is what I have on my machine, yours might differ.
When I refer to this directory subsequently, please use the one that makes
sense for your computer.
2. Head to the following website and download the "dds photoshop plug-in"
AND "these required DLLs".
http://developer.nvidia.com/object/nv_te xture_tools.html
3. Dump the contents of the "dds photoshop plug-in" into the plug-ins
directory you made.
4. Dump the contents of "these required DLLs" into the Windows\System
folder.
5. Next, DirectX 9. There's a link to it on this page:
http://developer.nvidia.com/object/nv_te xture_tools.html
If you think you might have DirectX9 already but aren't sure. Hit
WindowsKey-R then type this in the "run" window: dxdiag. It will show a
directx version number at the bottom. It should be at least 9.0.
6. Make sure Paint Shop Pro 7 is good to go
Under File->Preferences->File Locations, Select the "plug-in-filters" tab
Folder 1 should be: C:\Program Files\Jasc Software Inc\Paint Shop Pro
7\Plug-ins Check all the checkboxes.
7. Restart Paint Shop Pro
8. Open a DDS"

Use Photoshop. It gives you more options. Or just reduce the number of colors that go into your image. GIF's are much better with flat colors.

There's a menu under File>publish settings. Use this for more options than 'export'. But if i read you correctly, you're better off using a free raster program, like GIMP.

Paint shop is like Photoshop?

Nope. Two different companies: Paint Shop is owned by Corel, Photoshop by Adobe.

DDS file editing?

One thing that might be geting in your way: you're using the trial edition. They might cut some features until you buy the full version.

The Freeware Gimp has a plugin for everything!
What kind of data is in a DDS, anyways?

Skins for games. Like in TES4: Oblivion uses DDS file for the world objects and every other thing in the game.

O.K. so my dad likes to clean the PC every once in a while and get rid of all the useless programs we don't use. Unfortunately he had gotten rid of GIMP. I told him he shouldn't of done that but he didn't know...but anyway. So luckily I just went into the trash bin and revived it. I went into it to see if anything was fucked up and as far as I saw nothing had changed. so I was just working on some random shit when I tried to save with the file extension .jpg pretty standard file extension by anyone's book. But when I tried to save it it said that the file extension was unknown and wasn't on the file I was wanting to save it to. I checked the file extension and the only one's there were .xcf and by extension. So here is the question. How do I put .jpg on the list of file extensions?

TL;DR- GIMP won't save any of my .jpg work or .gif and I don't know how to add them to the list of file extensions. Please help.

OK, it doesn't look like you nor you father know very much about computers so I'll try to be clear. Your best course of action is to uninstall the program and then reinstall it. NOT DELETE. Uninstall. Yes, there's a difference - deleting GIMP's folder means that little bits of the program get left behind. Uninstalling ensures that the program is removed completely.
After that redownload and reinstall the program. You will NOT lose any pictures that you have created. You MIGHT lose any custom brushes/patterns/settings - it depends IF and where you installed any.

Also, no need to be a dick about your thread being deleted. It happens when you miss the "New to art? READ ME!" sign...

Ok. I got it. but are you really sure I won't lose anything. I can't undo uninstalling it. So I just want to be very sure about it.

also wasn't trying to be a dick. but she seriously is very up tight. You have no idea what I had to do just to get my art work in. I mean until you do the slightest thing wrong you have no idea who your talking about.

Im usually more of a traditional draw the pic with pencil and add ink/ scan it and post it online kinda guy. but ive recently decided to sorta try doing pics with flash. the question i have is this:
I dont have a graphics tablet, and yes im working towards obtaining one.
So between Adobe Flash CS4 and Illustrator CS4, what would be better for drawing an image. im aware the brush tool can make smoother lines, but is there a specific program, or tool, that may suit my needs better? like is Illustrator better than flash for just individual artwork? or should i use Photoshop CS? (which i also have)
thanks for the input people!

I dont really think this should be in the tech-support, but Ill answer it anyway.
Id say out of the three options, Photoshop is closest to actual real life drawing. Its a very solid program that might take a while to get comfortable with (and to explore all the functions) but it will definitely last for quite some time. Flash and illustrator are vector based, which makes it easy to make nice smooth lines, but details will take more time than in photoshop (in my experience). I personally prefer flash for simple cartooney art, cause that doesnt have a lot of details, and it saves me the effort of cleaning up lines and stuff. For other work I usually take to photoshop.
Recently I have used Illustrator on a few occasions, for example to create my new sig and userpage header. The background pattern and the logo (JQB) were drawn in Illustrator. I then transported those to photoshop to add the glows and colors etc...
This could probably have been done in illustrator alone, but Im not really comfortable working with it.
This list is also probably quite helpfull in answering your question

Well, it all depends. Some people like to draw in flash, others like to draw in photoshop. I suggest downloading the trial of one, try it out for a bit, download the trial of the other, try that out, and then decide which one you feel more comfortable with.
They're both great programs, so I'd say it's more of a personal preference thing.

I've drawn a vector image using the paintbrush on Flash, and I want to copy it into Photoshop so that I can still resize it like a vector. It plain out wouldn't copy, so I tried copying the vector image to Illustrator first, but only part of it copies into illustrator (as you can see in the screenshot, the inner parts of the vector image do not copy... eyes etc.) for some reason.

Any pro tips? Thanks. Need help asap as it's for a homework assignment!

Have you tried exporting out of flash (File > Export > Export Image..) as 'Adobe Illustrator' (6.0). You should then be able to open that and copy/paste into ps as a vector smart object without losing any of your image and maintaining the scalability of it (I think, lol).
