I've seen waay too many treads titled "how do i do this with paint?" and "is this supposed to happen?" and, "why my program no work!??!" that immediately get locked. Here's the place to ask those questions!

Programs! - these are your tools.

freeware
the GIMP - simple image editing, and some tablet support.
Paint- comes with any PC.
Infran View - image viewer, you can open anything and save it to everything.
Paint.net- pretty decent freeware, but the brush bleeds a lot with a tablet.

The big ones

corel Painter $430 - very intent on realism, it renders brush strokes. lack of filters, 30 day trial.
Photoshop- $650- $1,000. it's got its own verb. plenty of filters, and intuitive brush customization.
Flash - $700, vector/animation software. it's what the stuff in the portal is (usually) made with.
Illustrator- $600, another major vector software. i don't know much about this one.

Keep it to technical questions/bug squashing. I don't know much at all about the artistic side of art, so keep that to the actual forum, just remember to post your picture first! Don't know how to do that? It's that "Browse..." button below where you type. if it won't fit, crop/resize it. Or else.

Now, is there a way to make my photoshop brush act more like a corel painter one, so that it feels more like paining?

it "drags" the other colors and such

Photoshop's smudge tool has a "finger painting" option, which will add the the foreground color along with the smudged. it only works for short bursts where a higher strength makes it stay longer, but combining this with a custom or "speckled" brush, you can sorta get that effect.

Barring that, you could use some of the below settings with the normal brush to get those grains, or just do your roughs in PS, save it to a compatible format, color it in Painter, and bring it back into photoshop for the final touches.

Anyway I would ask how the fuck to colour in photoshop without a valid inked drawing but that'd require to much time and effort on your part.

well, the most important thing to do is to use layers. put the ink ontop. since you have a tablet (or so your thread said) you can use the brush menu to link anything to the pen's pressure... lower the opacity a bit, then brush on a darker color... over and other
if you mean coloring on a scanned in image, say so... that's another question that's commonly asked.
anything else, and you're getting into color theory.

Unlock the "background" layer (if you have one...the first thing I do is get rid of it, it is not necessary)....hold shift, select all of the layers...then flip horizontally or freetransform... or whatever

thank you so much, this will save me much time flipping each layer by itself and then dragging it to the right spot

yeah, they're definitely artist-based programs. the Sketchbook trial is pretty interesting, you can use 15 days, but they don't have to be consecutive.

and of course, they're cheaper. always a plus.

i'm currently researching Photoshop express. you can't draw with it, but it works for touching up photos.

i've got an intuos3, and Vista.... and cs3

anyone else have this trouble, where the tablet doesn't register the pressure?

mh-wait... yeah. fixed it. if you open the program with the tablet instead of the mouse, un/replug the wires... and restart it, it should work...

if you're a student, look into student discounts.
you could look for third party tablets... but the support for them might be a bit flaky. dunno, like i said... i just use my intuos3.

you mean like... "ooh, rain+sun!" kind of rainbows?

there's always the stamp tool, to copy/paste from the bits around it. press alt+click to select source area, then click to paste it.

post an example image, if this isn't what you're asking.

a google search for "GIMP font creator" returns this download page.

i think one of those will suit your needs nicely.
This computer i'm viewing it on isn't mine, so i can't vouch for them. i'll be trying them later though.

Sketchbook's pretty old, so it's the only art software that doesn't lag on my laptop.

Are you running some sorta of linux, and that's why you're straying away from win .exe's? if so... FontForge is probably your best bet... and ya just have to work around the imminent bugs.

like they said, GIMP is raster/bitmap... whatever. and... fonts are vector, allowing them to scale. to convert them requires making both a vector library AND a tracing algorithm from scratch, not to mention converting them all to a type file. to my knowledge, no one has done this. (at least according to the plugin registry)
